Thanks for that.Hill Road (High Street??) - http://tinyurl.com/427455fBalbriggan Inner Relief Road - http://tinyurl.com/3hzgq4mNaul Road - http://tinyurl.com/3m6oo7kDublin Street - http://tinyurl.com/4yfda4rDrogheda Street - http://tinyurl.com/43cvg44Balrothery/Courtlough Road (This is the road past Courtlough anyway) - http://tinyurl.com/3jm4bd2AFAIK the road that runs from Balrothery (to be more precise from the bottom of New Lane) to just before Man O War pub ,the right hand turn for Courtlough, is all called Courtlough. Some people I know who lived along that road all of their life told me that they lived in Courtlough and they lived closer to Balrothery then Man O War
That said: http://www.manowar.ie/contact-us/ isn't much help at finding it either (the pin is slightly off) - but I found Man O War. Google calls it Darcystown Road. Both roads seem to fit the description. Which is "New Lane"?
Having a look at Man O War, that was the orginal Dublin-Dunleer Road, presumably it was by-passed relatively soon so people wouldn't have to go over the hill.Rosepark-Cross of the Cage Road (I think) - http://tinyurl.com/3m3vl4m

Ok.
8. County Bridge. If you go to lidl and keep on towards the coast and go all the way to the end of the road,T -Junction. You are on a railway bridge which is County Bridge
9. AFAIK Delahassey is the townland that as you are heading towards Naul from Balbriggan go over the M1 bridge on the Naul side you are in Delahassey.
14. Hedgestown Road is Hedgestown lane. From Ballough take Man'O'War road then take 1st left and you are on the lane at least all the way down to 'Plants Machinery'.
16. Matt Road is Matt Lane. As per 9 above. Over the M1 bridge for Naul. Take 1st left. This connects Delahassey with Bog of the Ring.
22. I will go into the detail of this when I have more time if someone doesnt do it before me. But basically the old (lets call it ancient N1) Drogheda Rd, Ran from Murtaghs of Ballough up past MoW and into Balrothery.
23/24. AFAIK Mays Rd/Lane is the road that connects 14 above to Courtlough .It joins Courtlough just North of the Shooting Grounds.
Of course someone with a deeper knowledge may correct any of the above if they are wrong as I am just a mere Blow-in0 -
Tanners Water isn't a cul-de-sac. It starts just opposite Wavin and ends onto the Balrothery-Balscadden road.
The County Bridge crosses the railway tracks past Lidl/Pinewood and forms part of the main Balbriggan-Skerries road.
The Old Drogheda Road in Balrothery is known as Old Coach Road. It goes from the Balrothery Inn down to the north exit from the village.0 -

Old coach road ran from Drogheda through balbriggan, through balrothery and past the man o war pub.
in fact you can follow the route by pubs which were stage coach stops!
Julianstown Inn - The Cock and The Huntsman Gormanston - Some of the pubs in Balbriggan (milestone, where harvest is now was shay richardsons, white hart inn??? - Balrothery Inn, up the hill past the graveyard, through the roundabout and straight on to the Man O War, Murtaghs of Balough and so on on the dublin to dunleer turnpike road.0 -

Never thought about that! Makes sense when you do though. You learn something new every day.0 -
As per Morpheus:
The Man'O'War was in fact a toll station as it was a tolled road for AFAIK coaches. MoW was also a stop over point The pub itself being the inn. Just before the inn on the Dublin there was a stable for the horses. I believe the remains of the stable is now a garage on the side of a house. The lodgings were just North of the pub on the right hand side as you travel North. There still stands huge brick walls which indicate where it stood.0 -

5. Bremore Lane is I think the link to Flemington Lane in North West Balbriggan. The lane to the Bremore Headland - accessed to the side of Bremore Castle is known locally as Bell's Lane - for Bell's Cottage at the entrance.0

I've always known it as Tanners Water, could well be that the small stream that runs along it is known as Tanners Water though?
Edit, just thinking, there's a halting site/settled traveler accommodation/call it what you want on that lane, perhaps that is the Cul de Sac? you are referring to?0 -
I can only assume Hill Road is the continuation of Clonard Street.I've always known it as Tanners Water, could well be that the small stream that runs along it is known as Tanners Water though?

As a place, Tanners Water seems to be here:

All evidence seems to point to Tanners Water Lane being east of the R132. The halting site is known as Gardeners (aka Gardiners) Hill.

Fair enough, again you learn something new every day.
Out of interest Victor, is this for a project or is it just something you're doing to satisfy your own curiosities?0 -
-
Not a real project yet, but I was looking at street names in various areas and while Dublin City and South Dublin councils have produced street name directories, Fingal and DLR haven't. DCC think their directory is 95-97% correct, but I suspect its as low as 90%. The names of roads in Fingal is appalling, even when previously rural roads have been absorbed into towns.
http://www.dublincity.ie/SiteCollectionDocuments/Sr%C3%A1idainmneacha%20Bhaile%20Atha%20Cliath.pdf
While the worst above is three variants of a name, I've seen places with five. Another problem is determining where a road starts and ends.0 -
This is the map that I ultimately created. Caution - very large image.0

Thanks for the Fingal street names map in DCN. There are a few changes that I would propose around Black Hills (north west of Skerries).
- To the west of the the junction where you have the text "Black Hills" I would add Strifeland
- I would remove Lancaster Cottages as this refers to a row of houses & is not a street name as such - it is actually Strifeland (on the diagonally opposite corner of that junction)
- Barnageeragh Road is more commonly known as Barnageeragh Hill
- The northernmost entry for Grange Lodge Avenue should be changed to Baltrasna
- Immediately to the south of this by the inverted Y-junction is Margaretstown
- Ardla Road to the east should be replaced by The Grange
- Tougher Hill should be moved eastwards as it refers to a very specific stretch almost adjacent to the railway line to the east
- Milverton Hall Road can be removed & Milverton could be added to the 'box' just below the current entry for Tougher Hill
- Immediately to the west of the same 'box' you could add Shady Lane
- Killary Grove no longer exists & that stretch of road could be removed
- In its place you could enter Milverton Demesne - which covers that piece of land

I live with a specific address on rathbeale road in Swords on my voters card, but my postal address is different again, so I never show up on gps.

See attached. It does tend to show up on other maps.
I don't have enough space on the road to show it. Then there is the matter of is it "Glenn Ellan Road", "Glen Ellan Road" or "Glen Ellan Distributor Road"

Thanks
No it's neither of those roads, it's part of Rathbeale Road, and officialy known as Outlands, Rathbeale road, but a different name for the postal address
When we go to vote we are part of Outlands, maybe it's a townland name, I don't know
Rathebeale Road is all that shows up on your first map, and I can see my house on it0 -
Outlands is a townland, outline here: http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V1,717190,747724,5,7 - you can flick between the layers.
the road I was highlighting on Google Maps is Glen Ellen Road - both of them - the can zoom all the way in with this: http://fusion.fingalcoco.ie/LocalView/Sites/PlanningPortalAll/ - you can turn off the layers with the buttons on the left.0 -

It will be interesting whether some of these names become "official" with the introduction of postcodes, as at present my address is simply
"Beasty's Lair"
Milverton

This one? http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V1,723661,759243,7,3
Was this a house or what? I can't remember where I found the name.
Fair enough about the townlands, however, the names given for some of the roads are not in current usage. In my locality people would generally provide the names I suggested when asked for their address.
In relation to the latest version of the map - Lancaster Cottages are actually located diagonally opposite on the junction shown. Then, where you have Blackhills - that is Savoy Cottages. Blackhills is not actually a street name, but if one were to be picky - it could be the name applied to that junction, but is really the name applied to the wider area. Similarly - Cross O' The Cage is a junction/area & not a street as such.
I would suggest that if you wished to get the definitive names for these roads that Joe Clinton of the Skerries Historical Society would be a great source of infornmation. There is nothing that Joe does not know about that area.0 -

A big problem I see regularly especially in rural areas is people "invent" or change names themselves. Families who might have previously worked ground had their own names on ground and some of these stuck. This can cause mayhem in An Post where unless you have a good local knowledge it can be hard to find some families because of Multiple address for one dwelling. In Rush you have Whitestown Rd which to us (POSTIES) starts at junction of Park Rd and upper main st but some now call it Dublin Rd to go with Upper main st, Lusk Road and Whitestown Rd. The lane opposite Eurospar is know to most at Brook lane or the brook but also gets mail Bissetts lane and Farrens lane.
As The Hill Billy suggested you might be better going to local historical societies, Rush, Lusk, Skerries and Balbriggan all have them. Rush ICA had a good book out about 15 years ago which might be still available in Rush library and it gave good details on local street and townland names.
The national GEO directory should sort a lot of this out as massive updates have taken place over the last 18months in NCD0
