    Folks,

How will i be able to break open a steel pad lock. I have mislaid the combination code (4 digits). Will I have to turn to a locksmith and if so how much would they charge. The lock is similar to one you would use in the gym and is used on my side gate

You could try crack it, can be easy enough depending on the lock. Put pressure on it as though you were opening it and then turn one of the dials, start at one of the ends but try both, as each digit clicks around you'll get a certain feeling, and one should feel different, like an extra bit of click. Check it a couple of times to make sure getting same number than set to that number and try next one, may have to skip a digit and go on to next, and might not get them all, but if you get one or two digits might even remind you what the code was, worth a try anyway, has worked for me in the past.

Could you not borrow a bolt cutters off someone?

If you don't know anyone with one, you could always chance your arm at a local school/gym/place with lockers and ask for a lend of theirs. Or maybe try a chisel and hammer, forcing the body of the lock downwards sharply at the point where it meets the shackle bit.

    Thanks Folk,

So the only option would be bolt cutters or the likes?

A lump hammer will break most 'domestic use' locks, if hit hard enough against some concrete.

The only problem with your suggestion is that the lock is locked to the gatethus if I hit it with a lump hammer while in use I would feck up the side gate
