While I actually loathe these programmes and her audition has been seen a squillion times by just about everyone on the planet it has to be Susan Boyle.

Our media is saturated with the cliche that is the 'underdog story' to the point that having a bad childhood (real or imagined) has almost become a pre-requisite to being successful but even as cynical as I am there is no denying that Boyle was the real deal; Someone whose talent was completely dismissed her whole life because she didn't conform to our manufactured ideal of what talent should look like only to triumph in a moment of pure jaw dropping vindication to put us all in our place (go on admit it you sneered like the rest of us when she first appeared and assumed she would crash and burn to our laughs and howls)

Again I hate these shows but once in a while they do capture something special;
