Hahaha! How many hundred on the computer and you're skimping on one of the most important, yet cheapest, components required for FPS gaming. Gas man! Recommend the Logitech mice aswell, specifically the MX518 - nice big side buttons, easily pressible for quick stabbing and fluid reloading... wow, I sound crazy saying that!

should just buy components through hardwareversand.de and they'll build it for you for €20, it's alot cheaper that ways so you could get a better gpu, how much is your overall budget? also does that comp come with a copy of windows 7? and can you link us to it?

i have a machine there that I am hoping to sell for 200 and my budget thereafter is about 500. That spec doesn't include windows as I have all of that kind of thing. Will the GPU run BF though? The rest of the machine is sound but I will price hardwareversand and see if it saves me

So, i'm trying to build myself a decent machine, that will (hopefully) be able to play at near max settings. Came up with the below. Slight over what i had planned to spend though.
    Intel Core i5-2500K Box, LGA1155
    Gigabyte GA-H67MA-USB3-B3, Intel H67, mATX
    8GB-Kit Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600 MHz CL8
FRACTAL DESIGN Gehäuse DEFINE R3 Black Pearl
    Corsair Enthusiast Series TX750 V2
    HIS HD 6950 IceQ X Turbo GDDR5 2048MB, Native HDMI 2xDVI 2xMiniDP
Western Digital AV-GP 750GB SATA II, 32MB, CE Western Digital7500AVDS

Should i be good with that spec? Price is roughly €800.

Only thing I would change is your motherboard. You want a P67 or even better a Z68 chipset as they will allow you to overclock the 2500k. Also get an ATX with support for CrossFire, rather than a mATX as the HD 6950 scales extremely well in CF giving you a good option to upgrade in the future. Something like the Gigabyte GA-Z68XP-UD3 will do nicely.

Ok, so i added the card you suggested. €849 pre-built so far.

    Total build cost: €776.08 + €30 shipping
    Intel Core i5-2500K Box, LGA1155 €175.58
    8GB-Kit G.Skill RipJaws-X PC3-10667U CL9 €40.79

    MSI P67A-GD55 (B3), Intel P67, ATX, DDR3 €123.41

+ the €20 if you arent going to build it yourself.

tbh i wouldnt bother with a z68 board unless you are going to be using an ssd smaller than 60gb and the caching feature are sort of pointless then, as well as the fact that a lot of the gigabyte z68 boards don't come with video out, which is one of the reasons to get them in the first place
Changed the WD hdd for a bigger capacity samsung f3

I would also consider getting an aftermarket cooler such as the Scythe Mugen 2 Rev. B - €32.99. You should be able to reach 4.5 GHz easily enough with it.

Looks good. I had to change the PSU, as it says longer then 7 days till it's in stock. So i went with the Corsair GS Series, 800 Watt. Seems decent from the few reviews i can fine, and it's only an extra €10.

    http://www1.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=48798&agid=1630

As for the extra cooler, i figured i'd hold off overclocking anything just yet, and then get one if needed in the future.

Played Alpha with same rig i always used for BC2, BC2V and was perfectly playable on Medium:

    - Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400 @3ghz
    - 4GB DDR2 Ram
    - GTX260 NVidia (768Mb)
    - Win7 Ultimate 64bits

I purchased this http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/acer-predator-g5900-1-refurbished-desktop-pc-08623500-pdt.html a number of months ago with a view to games such as BF3 being released.

As a complete amateur when it comes to PC specs, I would be grateful for any advice people could offer regarding a) the ability of my PC to run BF3 and b) recommended upgrades that would enable me to run BF3 on higher settings than its current specs will allow.

I think the phrasing of those queries alone will be enough to convince people of my PC-gaming ignorance!

It's only a dual core, and it's only got a DX 10.1 capable video card, so it's definitely on the weak side of things.

Dont expect high or ultra settings.

Thanks for the reply. If I want high/ultra settings, what sort of upgrades would I need?

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 17,133 Mod ✭✭✭✭cherryghost

A processor and a graphics card update. You can upgrade reasonably cheap to this quad core CPU. It's a lot faster than your current dual core and you could sell it off for about 80-100.

GPU wise you'd be looking at something around the 150+ price range to get good performance. I suggest the 6870/6950/GTX560 mark and up

The 6950's are a great price and can be got for approx €240 from pixmania.ie

or go for a second hand 5870 which is a bit more powerful and can be picked up for about €150-180 I'd say.

What I must stress is this....Don't even bother upgrading ur video card if you've a crappy dual core...as in BC2 minimum is a quad core cpu if you want fps above 40.

Assuming I make those upgrades, what sort of settings will be available to me? I'm sorry for asking what could be an awkward question to answer definitively!

    Thanks for the reply.

Just wana get your opinions on how my rig will run BF3.

    Intel Core 2 Extreme Q6850 @ 3.6Ghz
    4GB 800Mhz RAM
2 x Nvidia Geforce 8800 GTX 768MB running in SLI
    Windows 7 x64

    Its a Dell XPS 720 H2C

    Cheers!

So long as theres no SLI driver issues on launch, you should manage high settings reasonably ok. Never underestimate the 8800GTX in SLI!

Wonder what sort of specs you would need for BF3 eyefinity on max settings, no AA

Dont think my 2x 5870's will do it :(

the cpu you linked to is out-dated and overpriced atm, amd's phenom quad-cores are alot cheaper but are the minimum you'd probably need need for bf3 without bottlenecking the gpu:

    http://www.pixmania.ie/ie/uk/4291725/art/amd/phenom-ii-x4-955-3-2-ghz.html

The new generations of i5's like the 2400 and the 2500k are alot faster then the last generation i5's like the 750 you linked to and are are cheaper or the same price:

    http://www.pixmania.ie/ie/uk/8223654/art/intel/core-i5-2400-3-1-ghz-6-mb.html
    http://www.pixmania.ie/ie/uk/8314868/art/intel/core-i5-2500k-3-3-ghz-6-m.html

also the 2500k can be easily overclocked to 4.5ghz which makes it completely amazing for it's price.

your right gpu rise a 6870 is the minimum you should be looking at but i'd say that wuldn't run it at 1080p tho with max graphics but it could at 720p.
I'd say go with a 560ti or a 6950 as the performance to price ratio is pretty hard to beat over on hardwareversand.de.
and lets not forget 6950's can be unlocked to 6970's ;)

I was basing the CPU on the fact that he wouldn't need to upgrade the motherboard or anything inside of his PC. Performancewise the i5 CPU is about on par with the new AMD quad's and only narrowly beaten by the X6's. But yeah if he wanted to upgrade the motherboard as well as the CPU then by all means.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,185 ✭✭✭IrishMetalhead

sorry wasn't aware he has a socket 1156 board
but tbh i think he's better off getting one of the older quad-core i5's used as they have sky rocketed in price new and tbh i don't think there worth it at that price

Sweet! Was hoping that it would run on high at least, hopefully Nvidia's drivers are bug free on release!

They are great cards though, I have been able to run prety much every new game at max settings @ 1920x1200 including Crysis 2.

your video cards are a bottleneck...
I know the 8800gtx's were a beast back in the day but that's long gone now.
You should be good for about 40-60fps on medium settings (dx10) and average resolution....what rez is your monitor at?

I think you underestimate it a bit. BC2 on a single 8800GTX ran with high settings at around 40fps and at 1080p too.

Nvidia Hierarchy, in order of course:

    Discrete: GTX 590
    Discrete: GTX 580
    Discrete: GTX 295, GTX 480, GTX 570
    Discrete: GTX 470, GTX 560 T
    Discrete: 9800 GX2, GTX 285, GTX 460 1GB, GTX 465
    Discrete: GTX 260, GTX 275, GTX 280, GTX 460 768 MB, GTX 460 SE, GTX 550 Ti
    Discrete: 8800 Ultra, 9800 GTX, 9800 GTX+, GTS 250, GTS 450 Discrete:
    Discrete: 8800 GTX, 8800 GTS 512 MB
Go (mobile): GTX 280M, GTX 285M
    Discrete: HD 4770
    Discrete: 8800 GT 512 MB, 9800 GT
    Go (mobile): 9800M GTX, GTX 260M (112), GTS 360M (GDDR5)

2 8800GTX's is roughly the same grunt as a GTX275 to GTX280. Not to be sniffed at whatsoever. I should know my elder rig has them ;). The last 4 years has consisted of me having an 8500GT, 8600GT, 8800GTX SLI, 9600GT, 9800GT, GTX260, GTX285, GTX295, GTX570 (not in that particular order), and I still have a few of the cards just so I can swap them around on my rig and compare performance (I'm a nerd/sucker :o)

    What kind of settings/FPS would I expect at 2560×1440 using this setup;

    i5-2500K
    GTX 580 (1536MB)
    8GB RAM

That's my current set-up although I have the i5 overclocked too 4.6. It will run BF3 on max settings without any issues, I would expect 60+ FPS constant!!

The GTX 580 is a Beast :pac:
