I'm trying to help out a mate of mind abroad - who has the good fortune to have a 500mbps synchronous line from his local cable broadband company.

However, he wants to squeeze out the maximum bandwidth out of this but the problem is this.

The consumer router provided by the isp doesn't come anywhere achieving this throughput. He's corrected that by ordering up a professional standard router.

However, what he didn't realise is that the alcatel modem supplied by the isp is also a bottleneck! I checked this for him - and it says that it's gigabit ethernet port achieves speeds between 200-500mbps. There's no point in him spending out good money on a router if there is another point of weakness prior to this - at the modem.

Question: Is it generally a possibility for the client to swap out cable modems without the cooperation/involvement of the isp? If so, what would people suggest as a replacement - bearing in mind that he doesn't mind shelling out if it means achieving greater bandwidth (and also, taking into consideration that the isp suggested that there may be further increases possible in the near future)?

Ok, so it's simply not possible - thanks for the clarification.

Someone must have come up against this problem before? Is it likely that an isp would cooperate in either allowing another modem to be installed - or doing so themselves? Obviously, this is a question my buddy will be putting to them - but just wanted to get as much info as possible beforehand. Also, please note this is a business line that he has paid for.

ISP won't allow uncontrolled modems on, as they can't control the package otherwise. If they can't provision it, they can't control it, and they won't allow it.

Which cable company's offering 500Mbit/s synchronous connections? That's still a few years away on UPC and Virgin Media.

All the above posts are correct. Cable modems, unlike DSL, are generally owned and operated by the cable company.

You might be best to ask them if they have any alternative models that are more appropriate for that speed of service.
