Certainly the most disturbing documentary I've seen in a long time, and possibly the documentary that has had the longest effect on me ever, is 'Banged up Abroad' [hate the 'locked up abroad' name ] Series 8 eps 1 on Netflix.

They promote it as John McCain's story but he is barely in it, it is more about a fellow POW of the Vietnam war called Ernie Brace who was held for 7.5 years.

As always with Banged up Abroad the people involved tell the story so Ernie does so, recored shortly before he dies.

Anyway, it is so disturbing I'm still thinking about over 2 weeks later while I'm eating a yoghurt or doing the washing up :(

When you hear and see what he went through you can see where they got parts of the story of 'The Deerhunter'.

If ya know 'The Deerhunte'r when they are in the cage in the river and there is a guy in the background who is barely acknowledged and his spirit is clearly broken.

That kinda reminds me of Ernie, but when you hear what he went through,.... Jaysus....

    Racing extinction ( 2015)

Oscar-winning director Louie Psihoyos assembles a team of artists and activists on an undercover operation to expose the hidden world of endangered species and the race to protect them against mass extinction. Spanning the globe to infiltrate the world’s most dangerous black markets and using high tech tactics to document the link between carbon emissions and species extinction, Racing Extinction reveals stunning, never-before seen images that truly change the way we see the world.

for those that havent spotted this, brilliant documentary about a man framed for sexual assault by a sheriffs office who had his conviction overturned by dna evidence after 18 years only to be rearrested for another murder. Very much in the vain of that Serial podcast that some of ye have surely heard.

Halfway through episode 8 and am totally floored by this. I knew nothing of the case or maybe just cant remember but man its been tough to not Google this. It can feel very dragged out at times but gets utterly compelling about a 3rd of the way though. I'm not even finished yet. Wow so far!

I watch a documentary on Sky Atlantic called Heroin - Cape Cod. The full version can be got on YouTube. One of the most honest and brutal documentaries I've seen about drug abuse. The makers follow and record both the drug user and their families. As a parent myself, I felt so sorry for the parents involved in this documentary.

The History of the Eagles on Netflix is one of the best music biographies I've seen in years. I wouldn't even class myself as a fan of the band but I was engrossed for 3 hours.

Also on Netflix is Back In Time is a crowdfunded documentary about the Back To The Future trilogy which is very good.

If you haven't seen Weiner yet check it out. Absolutely bizzare situation with access all areas but also leaves you to ponder the media's role in political reporting.

Federal officer with the Department of Homeland Security discovers a national security breach related to the entry of 23 aliens from terrorist countries into the United States. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner, former head of the DEA Robert Bonner can't afford any more media scrutiny, since his incompetence was already exposed in the NASA 'Challenger' disaster. To avoid the scandal, the full might of the government is unleashed against Julia Davis, her family and witnesses. This retaliation reaches the unprecedented magnitude, including four unexplained deaths, Hollywood and the Mafia, false imprisonments and the use of helicopters and airplanes for warrantless surveillance. Amidst many shocking revelations, this documentary provides a new insight into the deaths of well-known Hollywood figures unwittingly dragged into this scandal. The truth is no longer a secret.

Maybe not the best, but two that i have watched recently that are worth a mention:

    (1) Zero Day - The USA and Israel take the battle against Iran obtaining the bomb to cyberspace, the development and release of the Stuxnet virus, losing control of it and in the end having to fight to protect their own systems from it. Contributions from security experts from around the world including from and Irish employee of Symantec. Well worth a watch.

    (2) Weiner - Documentary following US politician New York Congressman Anthony Weiner's Mayoral campaign, his 'indiscretions', the impact that it has on his wife, who is soon to be the right hand woman of the next president of the USA.

The BBC did an excellent 6 parter about 10 years ago called Auswitz: The Nazi's and The Final Solution. Sensitive, accurate and we'll made. Also, liked The Bridge which looked at The Golden Gate Bridge and it's attraction to those wishing to commit suicide. Cheery kind of gal ain't I ;-)

I'm watching The Killing Season at the moment a new series on A&E in the States from Alex Gibney.

The Killing Season is an American true crime documentary television series which debuted on November 12, 2016, on A&E. Executive produced by Alex Gibney, the series follows documentarians Joshua Zeman and Rachel Mills as they explore the case of the Long Island serial killer and other unsolved cases such as the Eastbound Strangler, and the victims and investigations that have been connected to the cases.[1] Some new investigating and interviewing is done during the series, including contacting internet amateur crime investigation group Websleuths.com group members, and following-up on Websleuths activities.[2]

Series producers found sex worker serial killings to be a bigger problem than they expected and they look for obstacles that law enforcement have in solving the murders

The 10 years-on documentary about the bbc documentary detailing Michael Beurks report on the Ethiopian famine. It was the saddest thing I've ever watched. I got the bus to Belfast after to the BBC shop to try and get a copy as I really wanted everyone to watch it, but they didn't have it (bearing in mind this was pre Internet /sky plus). In it they highlighted that only the healthiest children got the ' butter' and the others would inevitably die anyway so they couldn't waste it. It showed the doctor lining the children up each day and choosing which children to give the butter to. One of the little girls put her head in her hands when she wasn't picked and then got up and tried to walk away but she just fell again she was so weak. Jesus, heartbreaking. I think it's the piece of footage that led to live aid.
