Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi,

My mothers 2003 ford fusion is in a garage for the last month. The car just died in the middle of driving it. She has ben told that its the same failure as the previous one where the gear box motor was replaced for €1500 including labour. anyone ever heard of this type of failure. The car won't start now because it stuck between gears. Its a tiptronic gearbox.

Hi grahamore,my 03 fusion has the same problem.Second time this has happened. My local garage fitted a new altenator and a starter motor first time round and the car was fine for 3 months until yesterday when it quit on me again. It is now stuck between gears and wont start. At this stage i feel like selling it for spare parts.Did your mom get her fusion fixed,my mehcanic reckons its more trouble then its worth to fix it.

    Bring it to ford.
There was someone on here recently with the Citroën version of your gearbox who's mechanic diagnosed a faulty torque convertor and topped it up with atf...

Which shows the extent of some mechanics knowledge of these types of gearboxes.

Its a manual box with electronics to do the auto shifting. The only thing to do is get it hooked up with Ford IDS as this will bring up codes for TCM, most other equipment wont be able to do this on fords.

Absolutely. We used to recalibrate the actuators on toyota mmt boxes as a preventive measure. These things are a bit of a nightmare especially if your mechanic isn't familiar with them or has no diagnostics

The fact that someone got a prognosis that the torque converter was shagged on a car that didn't have one isn't encouraging.

these gearboxes give alot of hassle we do a good few of them ,, as plug said you can only really work on them using ford ids diagnostics,, we do alot of them and the usually cost the guts of 1k to have repaired its never actually the gearbox its either the hydraulic pump or actuator and these are mental money, there is a fairly complex system for bleeding these boxes and programming them , so it will either be a main dealer or specialist garage,, the bad bit is put the guts of 1k aside if the pump module is gone

Thanks for the replies guy's.i called my local ford dealer and told em the story. The guy i spoke with told me i would need a new box (1200-1500e).He really gave the impression he did not want the job especially when i told him the year mileage(100k) etc.His exact words were "a nightmare job".Anyway's a nearby garage that was reccomended to me are taking the car in tomorrow and they seem confident they can repair it.thank's again for the advice.

I sometimes drive that car with the auto box and will admit its a crap gearbox or as a mechanic once put it, it's a lazy gearbox.

Putting your foot to the floor when in second or third isn't a problem as such, it's slow but it's okay however moving off from first gear when at junctions/roundabouts can be dangerous as it sometimes doesn't respond till a couple of seconds later therefore you can't take any chances.

Would never recommend one (and a fiesta) to anyone due to this.

    Hi,
My brother has a Ford cmax with an automatic gearbox and whole thing went! So it seems to be a problem with Ford cars. The cmax is only a 2007 model and to fix it will cost alot of money. Its put me off Ford now.....

Don't get an auto so. Ford are fairly reliable in most cases other than that it seems. I've seen maybe one or two cars in our garage with that problem. Its not that common.

    Hi Plug,

Yeah still though a 2007 car.... something as costly as that shouldn't go... I think stick with Toyota myself... I was going to buy a ford focus myself but glad i didn't.....

You know toyota use a similar system (multimode)

I wouldn't let this put me off manual fords
