Crazy heart rate readings

My heart rate monitor has been giving really dodgey readings lately (it's a Garmin 310XT). Yesterday I was cycling along at a conversational pace and it was telling me my HR was 224....anyone else experience this problem? Would it be the watch or the strap? (it's not that old btw, only got it last October)

Lubricate chest, strap slightly loose or change battery.

I've pretty much given up on the Garmin HR monitor cause of exactly that, seems there's a new one that fixes most of the problems, see the review of the 610 here.

I did try replacing the battery but still see crazy reading of ~220 like you when I'm just doing a very gentle run.

I got a €15 one in aldi last year strap is much the same as the garmin classic I find on easy runs where i am not perspiring a lot I get weird readings ( 2x my heart rate) tighting the strap and wetting my chest seem to cure it.

IMO if you want GPS more then HRM get a garmin, if you use HRM more then GPS get a polar.
