Here is my weeks shopping for my Dog:

3 chickens from Tesco for €9,
    lamb hearts from Supervaule €3,
    3 pig ears for €1
    2 pigs feet €3
    lamb liver €2.60
    Green Tripe €3
    Chicken Carcus usually free

so multiplied by 4 its about €86.40 but then there is always worm tablets or new leads that need to be bought.

Was just working this out over the weekend....

Spend about €70.00 per month on food and €17.50 on insurance. Vet average of €10 per month over 12 months.

    Kids are cheaper!

Can't believe how much people spend on treats and walks. Our dog's daily treat is his walk!

iv a 1 year old sprocker spaniel thats a very active, hyper and happy dog..i do buy the 12 packs of brandy in tesco for just under 8 euro which last a week and a big bag of dog nuts which do me a month..and insurance is covered by the national association of regional game councils which is 100 euro a year.altogether talking about 12 euro a week ha happy days:D

do you mind if i say... your one year old sprocker is more than likely hyper due to feeding him brandy dog food... not trying to be mean or anything... but if you switched to a higher quality brand ... your dog wont be a hyper plus a bag of 15kg costs around €55... lasts around 3 months... so would be better value for you... just an idea :P

I've an American Akita and a German Shepard cross.

I spend €20 a month on a 15kg bag of redmills( does be on various special offers every now and again)
    €10 on treats a month
    €60 - €80 a month on social classes
I walk the dogs myself and groom them too, looking into getting pet insurance too soon enough.

So looking at €90 - €110 a month, which doesn't include and visits to the vet which may come up or extra expenses like new leads etc.

Wow didn't realise how much it was til I did this lol. Seems like my dogs have a better social life than myself too :o

and he was mental until around 2 years of age.... he's now six... alot more chilled out... but the gundogs are brillant dogs with great personalities :D... sometimes i wish my guy would do menatl again... just for the day... you can get great fun out of them!

She was fully vaccinated as a pup (Against my will and wishes but can't argue with higher powers on issues they cant/wont understand) so she's never had to go to the vet for any reason. She'll be getting spayed next month, which I'm dreading sending her under the anestetic but not much I can really do between the health benefits of spaying and the fact that the rescue would take her back from me if I didn't get it done :( So between the rock and the hard place there I'm getting it done and giving her a round of natural meds before and after to minimalise the damage of the anestetic.

So because someone disagrees with you, you have that condescending attitude? Maybe if you'd dealt with pups dying from parvo etc, as I'm sure the rescue that you got her from have done, you wouldn't be so judgemental.

Whatever the benefits of titre testing instead of vaccinating adult dogs, every bit of research I've seen argues that they need their full puppy vaccinations and the booster at 1 year old age, then they can be tested each year to see if they have adequate antibodies.

I have 2 westies and this is the first time i actually sat down and worked this out!1

dog food - royal canine €60 (2 bags last around a month)
dentastix - €20 (one each per day €2.50 approx for a pack of seven
pig ears - €20 approx - one eacj per week (thats their saturday nite treat).
treats - €10 approx - bakers rewards or something similar - they get them at bedtime.

So thats €110 - then theres grooming twice annually at €45 per dog - I've tired to do it myself and they're too wriggly!! i've found a brilliant lady and it just seems to last ages with her.

Vet - €100 per year on boosters etc. I don't have insurance I just put monely into savings for any issues.

Dogsitter - €30 for a weekend but it'll cost €500 for our weeks holidays in August.

toys etc - not every month but tennis bals and teddies every so often!

beds and blankets - need replaced every so often

dog license - €15 each per year

leads, tags, collars etc - usually replaced annually

it all adds up doesnt it!!!

Appologies if that is how you took my comment as it wasn't meant in that way. I meant it was their higher power as they had the dog and I didn't. They are a fantastic rescue and I actually highly admire them for all the dedicated hard work that they do. Otherwise I wouldn't have selected a dog from them if I didn't believe they were a good organisation! I know I have an unusual and "outside" view of pet health care. I spend hours and hours, days and days, weeks and weeks reading up on all aspects of dogs and dog care. I've recently packed in my former occupation and would like to dedicate my life to it. So I'm learning all opinions and views at the moment to form and more concrete my own opinions. Personally from all the research that I've done, I disagree with the contents of most injections, not to the actual injections and what they are meant for. I don't personally accept injections to my human body, so no way would I for my pets either. The risks of the injection are far higher and greater than the risks without them. This is my own opinion and I em entitled to it, I'm also entitled to change it as well. I share my opinion freely and expect others to as well. If we share opinions, fantastic, we have a lot to discuss. And if we don't, well, that's just as equally fine and we still have a lot to discuss!

And my appologies to the OP as well. I'm sorry that someone took offense to my comment and that your thread was hijacked due to this side discussion. I just felt that the other poster had a slightly wrong opinion of my statement and I wished to clarify it and myself. My appologies again to the OP and I shall let things resume to the original thread subject.

Ps - To the other poster, if you wish to comment back to me please private message me so we do not hijack this thread any further as respect to the OP.

hi there I have 2 dogs (cocker spaniels) and spend about €385 per month on them
I was wondering if thats the average or way above?

It just seems like a crazy amount of money but the dog walker is something I woukld be very reluctant to remove as I am gone all day so that way they still get their 3 walks per day.
Anyway, they are worth EVERY PENNY :-)
Here is the brekdown (vet bills not included, new plants needed and skirting board not included) :-)

    Food (James Wellbeloved)
    €45
Dog Walker (5 days a week)
    €220
Dog Nanny (1 weekend away per month on average)
    30
    Toys/Treats
    €25

    Insurance
    €30

    Grooming
    €35

Royal canin - better quality food and should eat less.
    Walk the dog yourself?

As already pointed out, this is a discussion forum, so I don't really see why things can't be discussed in public, rather than in private.

Other people in this thread have disagreed with things that have been posted, including the post before this, about people paying to have their dogs walked.

I just don't really like being talked down to, or in fact being told what to do, I wasn't aware that because someone starts a thread it is 'their' thread and they dictate what form the discussion has to take. I haven't taken the thread off topic, until now of course, as people spend money on vaccinations or not, so it is part of the cost of looking after a dog.

So, if you feel so strongly about injections etc, that you had to bring it into this thread (which you did, not me and which could most definitely be construed as being off topic) why not start a thread about it, then everyone can discuss it in the open.:D

is Royal Canin really cheaper ? I suppose it would be if they really eat less of it but my dogs love their grub!

I walk them myself, morning and evenings, is there still a need for the dog walker while I;m at work ? I hired a dog walked because it breaks up their day and that way it's only 3-4 hours on their own morning and afternoon ....

just wanted to point out something....

for all the posters suggesting "walk your dog yourself" etc... while i understand where you are coming from... its not really about excerise with most people who pay for dog walkers... its about breaking up the dogs day.... trying to reduce the amount of time he's home alone... and NOT about the actual excerise...

for me i see it as a necessity... i started a new job around a year a sgo... sh*te hours compared to me last job... leave the house at 7am... home around 7.30pm each evening (sometimes 10pm.... sometimes 9pm etc)... it wouldnt be fair or right to leave him all day alone... so my dog walker (Tues/Thurs) is far more for compnay for my guy and for his sanity and to lessen my guilt for working such crap hours.... my hubbys parents take him on other days for company for them both...

4 nights a week i still bring him running for 5k.... so dog walking is not excersie motivated...:P

Sticking them on a tred mill is not a walk ,thier missing out on all the mental stimulation, hunting, play that they need etc,yes it get the job done but it defeats the purpose.

like eating a massive tub of lard will gain you weight but so will fudge icecream and chocalate cake and all the pleasure you get from it;)

Yes a dog walker is a neccessary expense when you own a dog if you dont have the time to do it yourself. Its unfair to leave any dog at home for long periods on thier own.

Totally agree with you... my guy is a gundog... and loves swimming, sniffing ... running around like a lunatic and running around with other dogs... my dogwalker collects 3/4 other dogs and takes them up the mountains.... he's knackered when i get home.... dead to the world... :P

its def a necessity for us... wouldnt and couldnt leave my cocker all day / 5 days per week home alone.... thats not a life for any dog

he's has a great life.. far better social life than i do  and because he is soo well excercised and socialised he is perfectly behaved ... well most of the time!
