I am playing my first season of cricket and am looking to buy decent bat. With a budget of approx €100 (€120 max.) can anyone offer any advice on what bat to buy and where I can or should buy it. I am 6' 2'' so I want a resonably large size. I live in the Dublin area.

    Thanks in advance

    Try this website....

    http://www.sportsdirect.com/cricket

Thats where I got all my gear from....very reasonable prices:)

I would never buy a bat from a website. Id suggest you go to one of the small cricket suppliers around the city, talk to them and have a look at a few bats, then make your choice based on one you like.

    Places to go are:

Club shop in Phoenix CC, phoenix park
Club shop in Clontarf CC, Castle Ave
Ed Sports in Pembroke Wanderers Hockey Club, Ballsbridge

Have to agree with TrueDub, you want to get the feel of any bat before you buy it. make sure the weight is right for you, the grip as well. At 6'2 you will want a full size bat with a long handle. Ed sports has some kookaburra bats in your price range. edsports.ie have a look online and then pop into the shop. For AP sports (clontarf) you'll have to go into the shop they don't have a website yet. Contact details for the shop in Phoenix are here http://phoenixcricketclub.com/club-shop/ but they don't have any pictures etc

    I agree...to a certain extent.

I suppose if you are just starting off playing cricket for the first time like the OP maybe not the best idea to buy one of a website and what TheDrog says about the weight and grip makes a lot of sense......but I personally have had no issues with any of the gear I have bought online:)

Thanks for the replies and advice. Before I go to the shops you mentioned is there any other tips from your personal experience you can offer such as your preference for Kookaburra, GM, Gray Nicolls etc. taking into consideration my price range.

My main concern is that whoever I deal with in the shop will be mostly concerned with making a sale rather than assisting a newbie to the sport so I want to gather as much independent info as possible. I have done some research on the net but would appreciate any opinions you can offer.

    Thanks a million

A big part of getting a new bat is just it's 'feel'. Ed has a good range and if you're lucky you can sometimes pick up decent bats at a good price in Elvery's but not that often. Go and swing a few. Best to try them with your gloves on.

The one thing to avoid is buying a bat that's too heavy - it'll make you play with too much bottom hand and across the line.

    Good luck!
