MINISTER of State for Trade and Development Jan O’Sullivan yesterday unveiled details of events to be held in Limerick to mark Africa Day.

A series of family events, will take place on Sunday, May 29, in the grounds of Limerick City Hall and the Milk Market.

They will showcase many aspects of African culture, including music, sport, games, literature, art and cuisine.

Africa Day is an initiative by the African Union. It falls in May each year and aims to celebrate African diversity and success, and to highlight the potential of the continent.

As well as support for events in Limerick, Irish Aid is co-funding a week-long series of events between May 20 and 29 in Dublin and Galway.

Ms O’Sullivan said: "The vast majority of the performers and community groups are giving their time and energy for free and this is a testament to the support our many African friends and neighbours enjoy in Limerick."

This appeared in the printed version of the Irish Examiner Wednesday, May 04, 2011
