What sort of dew points do you really need for a good thunderstorm in Ireland?
Also whats the highest dew point ever measured here?
I remember when i was on my J1 in the US a few years back, the dew point was about 20c most of the time, they used to get thunderstorms every 4-5 days or so. It was great :D

The higher dewpoint the better, but there's a lot more to it than that. If upper conditions aren't right then it doesn't matter what the surface dewpoint is. But thunderstorms have been forming in recent weeks with dewpoints in the mid teens and 500 hPa temps around -20 to -25C. A bit of proper deep layer shear, dry mid levels, etc could generate more organisation but it's hard to get all those ingredients together in Ireland.

I believe we've had dewpoints in the low 20s, but I don't know the exact figure.

Can anyone tell me if Kilkenny can expect any Thunder tonight? We generally seem to have a storm shield while the rest of the country gets all the fun! :(

The storm shield is around Cork and Waterford based on location being in the lee of the higher mountains, you should be in the plains more or less and I can testify that parts of Kilkenny get the best of all weathers, you are so lucky.

Today and tonight, chilling high winds and rain, maybe heavy or downpours, no lightening IMO.

Just posting a timelapse sequence i shot yesterday. There were some heavy downpours passed through yesterday followed by some cool cloudscapes.
This is a 4500 image sequence that took about 7 hours to shoot.

Its available to watch in HD

excellent video! Just beware that depending on your camera model doing 4,500 shots adds wear on the shutter - some pro models will be rated to 100,000 shots and you`d hit the 100,000 fairly quickly and the shutter would stop working!

What kind of camera did you use?

Cheers. I have an EOS 500D and a sigma 10-20 super wide lens. I looked into how much it would cost to replace the shutter motor before i started doing timelapse so i'm not too worried.

Hi, This is my first post here in the weather forum. I don't follow the weather much. However, yesterday (8:00pm ish) evening I saw what appeared to be a funnel forming over the Blarney/North Cork city region. There was a thundery cloud bank with a clearer sky behind it. It was extremely humid at the time. The funnel lasted about 5 minutes before it disappeared. It would dissipate a little and then reform. The humidity noticably dropped within 5 minutes. As well as the picture I have attached I have a video clip. I will post this later.

Sorry I never got around to uploading the video. I tried twice but the boardband dropped in the middle of the upload both times. Here is another short clip that I have forgotten I took "with my mobile in this case".

Heaviest rain I've seen in Dublin in years, not so much the volume but the persistence of the heavy rain.,.
