Hi, I’m Thomas Geraghty, current Communications Officer for GMIT Anime and Manga Society, and I’m here to let you know about all the cool stuff we have planned next year for all you anime & manga fans in Galway.

    gmit-anime-boards-who-are-we.png

The current Anime & Manga society has been running since a little before Christmas. However, because it was founded after the dedicated Clubs and Socs day it only had a very limited group of members, which grew during the year, but overall was very small compared to the prestigious NUIG Anime & Manga society, which hosted Galway’s biggest ever anime convention Akumacon earlier this year. With this in mind, I chatted with our current fearless leader David Shaughnessy about trying to expand and make next year the best year ever for the Anime Manga Soc. With my flashy new Communications Officer title I set about setting up forums, revamping our Facebook page and now I come to you, the members of boards.ie, the centre of Irish internet culture, as a humble pilgrim asking for your support.
Oh, I’m sorry, was I over dramatic? It can’t be helped; I am an anime fan after all ;)

    gmit-anime-boards-what-do-we-do.png

Loads of stuff! But I suppose our main activities are the same as any anime and manga society, namely:
    • Weekly anime showings where we introduce members to some anime they mightn’t have seen before, and some old classics.
    • Travelling to cons and getting to know like-minded people
    • Engaging in furious discussion about the deep meanings in Evangelion or Death Note’s over-reliance on Xanatos Roulette to make their main character’s look like psychic overlords.

    gmit-anime-boards-why-should-i-care.png

Because some of the most interesting anime fans I’ve ever met have been married, 30- somethings who have been fans for years and whose knowledge base is impressive to say the least. We want to build something in Galway for everyone, regardless of current link with third level education. If you’re a secondary school student you’re more than welcome. If you’re an old-school 4chan basement dweller you’re welcome. If you’ve never seen an anime before you’re welcome!
It’s my fond belief that the more diverse tastes and opinions we have every week, the richer the conversations will be, and the better the society will be at a whole. There’s no fee or commitment to attend, and I’ll be updating our blog weekly with current showings and special events so you can just show up and see what interests you if that’s your choice.

    gmit-anime-boards-how-do-i-join-1.png

Well as we’re entering the exam season and the summer holidays approach there’ll be no more meetings until September. We will be travelling to nomcon, so if you want to come with us you’re more than welcome, though I’m not sure how full the coach is right now. If you want to get to know some of us before then, you’ll find a link to our Facebook, twitter and forums at the end of the thread.
I’d also suggest visiting our forums at least once and subscribing to our RSS feed for “News and Announcements” with your favourite RSS reader (I personally recommend Google Reader) so you don’t miss anything, though I will be updating this thread frequently with news as it comes.

    gmit-anime-boards-non-anime.png

As an Anime and Manga Society, our first priority is always to serve out delicious helping of anime and manga to our members. However, I am well aware that nerd culture is severely underserviced in GMIT right now, so I promise that there’ll be a few social events during the year to dish out some love for comics, Western animation (south park marathon anyone? :D) and video games. My friends at the fighting games forum will be pleased to know that there’ll definitely be some Street Fighter, Blazblue and Marvel vs.Capcom love during the year.

    gmit-anime-boards-other-events.png

As a class rep two years running, I know how important a few nights on the town having the craic are for getting to know people you otherwise wouldn’t. So expect pub crawls, bowling and other activities non-anime related that will just be a bit of fun for all. One of our features last year was a “Highschool of the Dead” drinking game, where you would take a drink every time there was fan service on screen. We’ll be planning similar (but less dangerous!) events during the year

    gmit-anime-boards-how-do-i-contact-you-1.png

Simple, just click the links below!
    gmit-anime-boards-forum-btn.pnggmit-anime-boards-facebook-btn-1.pnggmit-anime-boards-twitter-btn.png

Alternatively you can send me a PM here on boards, post a reply to this thread or climb to the top of the tallest building you can find and scream my name until I show up. The above methods are listed in terms of how fast you can expect a reply :P
Well if you read all that then you’re definitely my favourite person right now! I’d love to hear your ideas and feedback below! Looking forward to meeting you in the coming year!

    Thomas Geraghty
    Communications Officer
    GMIT Anime & Manga Society

Nomcon - Since their mascot is a riceball, it's safe to say they're play off "Om nom nom!" in their name.

and GMIT - Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology

    soooo it's a mix I guess!

GMIT is the actual name of the third level institution :P Like, DCU A&M society or whatever.

Fantastic, great to see a new society starting up. If you need anything from AMS or Eirtakon just give me a buzz!

he doesn't want to cross in the city: a champion fighter, an informant,

Just thought I'd let you all know that after next Thursday's screening we'll be going for a few drinks in Flannery's Hotel. It's a nice chance for a good chat so if anyone if around Galway it'd be awesome if you could come along ^_^ And if anyone is crazy enough to travel up for a nerdy night out, I have a house with plenty of floor. If you can bring a sleeping bag it's certainly handier than a hostel since it's only 10 mins away from the college :)

Sorry to bump but we'll be hosting a 12-hour Katanagatari marathon quite soon. If anyone is around Galway soon it should be a treat, there'll be free sweets and drinks (REAL mountain dew should be a good incentive :p ).

We also do showings twice a week now, and I'm proud to say we screened almost every airing series this season :D Our facebook group is here https://www.facebook.com/groups/132752750158123/ and honestly even if you never have any interest in going to Galway, it's a nice spot for discussing weeaboo news etc. :)
