    Hi all,
Just wondering can anyone tell me where's the best place in Dublin for threaded bar? I don't know the exact size so I'll bring a matching nut and bolt with me but it's the size commonly used for bicyle axles.

    Thanks

    Thanks prospect.
Just rang them and they don't do a fine thread like I need.

    Feck,

My only other suggestion is Universal Products in D22,

Just been onto Tucks and no from them too.
Judging by their website I don't think Universal Products will either.
I'll have to go with plan B.

If it's off a bike I'd wonder is it an imperial thread that's just been carried over for years and years

    No luck so far.
The other option is to buy some plain bar and a suitable die and cut the thread myself.
Any idea where to get a die to cut 26tpi in 9.5mm bar?

Woodies sell it! Have got it there before a few times myself. They have matching nuts and washers too!

Ring one of the bigger Air Conditioning companies and ask if they have any spare or where do they get theirs.
They use it a lot for hanging their units with.

electrical wholesalers will keep it, electricians use it for suspending cable tray and uni-strut. the size your looking for sounds like m12 and its usually sold in 3 mtr lenghts.

M12 threaded bar is common as muck

OP, why do you need a fine thread, and what are you looking to use it for?

If it was common as muck I'd have bought some in the local hardware.
The only stuff that's common as muck has a coarse thread.

Standard thread M12 is common. You never said you were looking for fine metric thread.

M12 is massive and is a lot bigger than what would be used for a bicycle wheel axle. You'd be looking at something more like M8, and it would be unlikely to be fine thread.

Only time I've come across fine thread in use is on seatbelt mounts in cars and vans.

we have m 12 here and its heavy duty stuff. we also have a hollow threaded rod which comes in meter lenghts and is used in lighting also, it has a fairly fine thread and is appporx 10 mm diameter.

Try a bicycle repair shop. They might have replacement axles or can source them if an actual bicycle axle would met the performance specs for whatever application you have in mind ?
