Making a photo into a poster?

Hi all. Going up the walls here trying to add text to a photo to make it a poster for a gig. Have a previous poster that I've saved as a jpeg and simply want to add a bit of text over the photo. I have a mac. Any guidance gratefully received. :)

I can do it for you if its just a bit of text over a photo. I have to warn though the photo has to be in good quality, otherwise it will look pixelised.
