HELP: Digital camera---switches on then off again!

Basically I've had my camera 3 years, it's a basic Kodak, and when I hit the on button, it turns on and the lens extends...and then the lens retracts and the camera switches off again. I've tried new batteries with no luck! Any ideas? Thanks in advance!
