Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I downloaded prizm video file converter to convert a MKV file to an AVI one. When this was done, the file size of film was over 40GB!! Is there any software that I can download for free that will convert these files without a watermark. Or is there a way that I can convert them and not make the file sizes so big!!

You're decompressing into raw AVI, as such it'll be a few MB PER SECOND.

    1. Why not leave it as MKV?

    2. If you want to leave the MKV container, use Xvid or DivX codecs in an AVI Container.

    3. De-encoding an re-encoding like this is slow stuff, depending on your processor it could take several hours.

VLC Player can do the conversions, but its not super user friendly IMO. Imtoo is more friendly, but not free.

You can try 'any video converter' its a freeware download, used it before to convert mkv into avi for a friend, can be a little slow but worked perfectly

Why do you need avi? Why not just demux into mp4 if your media player/PS3/xbox doesn't like mkv. No need to re-encode.

I sometimes need to convert to AVI as my dvd player will not read mkv etc. I have used Freemake video convertor for all my conversion needs. Its free, and has worked fine so far.

    Try mediacoder.

A 'typical' AVI uses MPEG-4 Part 2 video (eg Xvid or DivX) and either MP3 or AC3 audio. If you are converting in order to make it compatible with something that advertises AVI compatiblity, then that's what you'll need to encode.

Also most of those things (DVD players, low end media players) only support standard definition AVI playback (720x576 or smaller).

With any decent encoding software, you can control the file size yourself, either by directly specifying the size, or else by specifying the video and audio bitrate.
