Similar was once tried. It was called Mikado, evolved from being the engineering society, after a schism from Astro 2. It is now dead.....

this year, the credit all goes to her. My glittery torch holding is over. Last year however, tootyflutty will agree I was Ciara 'Playdo' Buckle

Any Clubs or Society's that anyone would recommend?

Is there an equestrian/horse riding club?
And what is the tea club all about?

    :D

I know there >is< an equestrian club, but I don't know anything about it. And the TeaSoc (club sporting, society non-sporting) is about, well... tea.
    They drink tea!

The equestrian club had its AGM in one of the SU meeting rooms after a MHS talk last year and there were about 30 people at it, so I imagine they're active enough :)

    is there a sewing society?!
Pretty sure there isn't! You could always start one up if you wanted.

There isn't but Playdo, the arts crafts and photography society, would probably be interested in holding a few sewing sessions. They did knitting/crochet last year. I'm sure if you say it to them they'd be very interested!

Is playdo for extremely extremely arty people? Like it sounds unreal fun, but I wouldn't be the most artistic, but I love photography? :P

Oh, also, what's the drama society like? Like, the audition process, if there is one, is it commuter friendly, all this?

Tea Soc is awesome. We just sit around and drink tea. It's on in the afternoon so it is commuter friendly. Also, as equipment officer, I'm telling everyone to join :pac:

Veggie Soc is on in the evenings. We do a weekly pot luck (everyone brings food for everyone else to try). Now with funding we should be able to do a bit more, like outings to restaurants.

Would there be any chance at catching last bus from the Veggie Soc meetings? :p

    French soc is cool!
They organise debates and things, and also food nights, with French food and such jazz, and as well as that I'm nearly convinced they have regular meetups where you're supposed to speak French!

We're usually on about 7pm. We could be moving off Wednesdays this year though.

Oh Jebus no! We have loads of people that just want to have fun with glitter, or make cardcoard armour, or like you just have an interest in photography.
You don't have to be Monet to join Playdo, just want to get messy and have colourful fun :p

I only really came out for the photo things, but they were some laugh!
Despite being frozen, shouted at by priests and chased by security guards!
    :D

Anybody here in the music soc? Just wondering how strange it would be if I joined looking for a songwriting partner or something similar. Interested in writing songs with different people and different instruments/styles. Different as in not a rock band!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 912 ✭✭✭Norrdeth

I was in it for a few years, good laugh but very general.
They could hook you up with a songwriting partner no probs I'd say.
Or you could advertise it yourself which might work out better.
Stick up a few posters in the music dept and I'd say you'll find something.

I am in the music society committee this year. If you want to like our facebook page http://www.facebook.com/Msumusicsociety it may be a good place to start! if you wanna put a wall post up there or something that is fine with us and we can help you in that sence. We are open to new ideas all the time so fire ahead :)

Anyone know what day fairs day will be this year?

Anyone know what day fairs day will be this year?

With lectures seeming to start back on the 19th of September, in all likelihood (i.e. assuming it follows the trend of the previous 7 years) it will be on Wednesday September 28th.

What's the story with the Electronic Music society and the Parkour club?

EM isn't that great, I joined last year and they didn't have many worthwhile
events despite a few raves...I don't think they have any talks/workshops
either. TBH I didn't get a good impression.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 170 ✭✭sudzy

I was in EM before.. Think the lads a couple of years ago were all djs and they did a few tutorials and demos. They were pure into minimal and stuff like that, so was hard to draw a crowd for gigs.. Couple of raves last year but same again i think, tough gettn a decent crowd into the SU.

It'd be good to get it going, but ya can't compete with the likes of black eyed peas and lady gaga in mantra and that! :(

This is a long shot but worth asking......I am wondering if there anywhere I could learn a language during my course? Ideally I would love to learn sign language but really anything would do. It would have to be from scratch but I'm a fast learner! Thanks

You can do an evening course in the language centre for €150 but there's no sign language.

Would anyone know the fees for joining some societies? Especially Dance, Drama and International, because in some colleges the fees are quite high and I can't afford much

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,081 ✭✭✭LeixlipRed

Eh, you don't even have to pay to join most :D If you just say you're a bit stuck for cash they generally let you away! Though they just ask for 2 or 3 euro normally :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 912 ✭✭✭Norrdeth

    €2 per society!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 577 ✭✭✭Paczini

That's Great! I was worring to get sometking like 10euro for the answer

I wouldn't advocate this approach, cos it's a headwrecker for the committee to keep track of, and ultimately when it comes to submitting member lists for capitation, you are short changing them. Clubs and socs can only submit/apply for capitation with member numbers that match the number of payments they receive. The more paid up members they have, then the greater argument for money, whereas if people don't pay, but do take part, they haven't helped get capitation, and are also using the (potentially lower) capitation allocated.

Is it necessary to have experience if you want to join Drama soc?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,036 ✭✭✭Sanity_Saviour

Don't know if it's been asked before but whats the story with the soccer link with st. pats athletic is it just scholarships or what? and is there just the one team for freshers and seniors?

Like most societies, experience is not necessary. Just being an enthusiast is usually more than enough! You'll find others that have joined are in the same boat and others that are veterans, so just go with the flow :P

No, there's a freshers and seniors team. And I assume you would have had to apply for the scholarship before the start of term but maybe not. The man you want to contact is Barry Prenderville. He's the FAI's development officer attached to the university. His contact details are on this page: http://sports.nuim.ie/personnel.shtml

Does anyone know what the basketball club is like?

I know a few clubs don't cater for beginners and I heard basketball was like that. But I'm not exactly a beginner at basketball, I've played it on occassion all my life. We didn't have a team in secondary school so I wouldn't exactly consider myself an exception.

Defo joining the music society, mainly because its so broad and caters for people interested in music appreciation as well as playing. But I want a sporting club too so I can keep active.

Any information would be cool from anyone :p I know that there is a freshers and a senior team. I don't know how often they play or how high the standard is, but I'd like to play as much as I can, so if there isn't much, I'll consider joining the Kilcock u20's. We'll see in a week or two sure!

Which ones you thinkin about? They range from very active to not active at all. Not really sure how there'd be any "hassle", the thing about clubs and socs is that you can usually put in as much or as little effort as you want as long as you're not part of the committee.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,081 ✭✭✭LeixlipRed

There's very few active political societies on campus. What are your politics? If you're looking to join one of FG/FF etc then I can give you the number of a guy who'll sort you out :)
