An initiative aimed at making broadband access available to every home and business in the country by the end of next year is being announced today.

The Minister for Communications has also said he will be taking measures to speed up the roll out of next generation, high speed, internet access.
The Government claims a mix of private and public investment has resulted in broadband internet access coverage to 99% of the country.
However, the remaining 1% will be the focus of the scheme being announced this morning.
There is a National Broadband Scheme but un-served locations, which are extremely remote or cannot be served for technical reasons, will be targeted and a service provider identified by the Government.
Minister Pat Rabbitte says his Department will accept applications for a three month period starting today, people who cannot obtain a broadband service are being encouraged to make contact.
The Rural Broadband Scheme will the Government says help promote economic and social development in rural areas.
Mr Rabbitte says the scheme will ensure broadband is available to anyone who wants it by the end of 2012.

Don't believe his lies, He's spouting out the same shíte as his predecessor. The NBS wasted 250 million and didn't bring a single household real broadband.

Here we go again, different Minister, same horse****, still, another nice little earner for Analysis Mason, the only people who ever gain anything from these "initiatives"

Bit of advice Minister, don't let anyone in the Civil Service, Public Service, Semi-State or assorted "Consultants" who were involved in The MAN, Group Broadband Scheme or the National Broadband Scheme projects, next or near this "initiative", or, you will be back here again in 3 years time announcing another "initiative"

This is poor, and to hear the likes of Adrian Wreckler spouting nonsense on radio that the main problem with the NBS was only that it didn't cover the "last 1%" is even worse.

How anyone can condone a large subsidy to a mobile operator to help it meet its own license obligations is beyond me. The precedence in other european countries is clear, fixed broadband for rural (even isolated) areas is not impossible and is quite viable with a little cop-on.

"Analysis" Mason also have a lot to answer for given the delusional advice they've offered on broadband in this country. If they had their way they'd still be using the "there is no demand" argument that they continued for half of the last decade... They are not fit to offer advice on communications matters in this country.

RBS checker is located here - http://www.dcenr.gov.ie/Communications/Communications+Development/Rural+Broadband+Scheme

Appplication form for it is here https://secure.dcenr.gov.ie/InternetRBS/apply/apply?execution=e1s1

The RBS scheme only applys if you have no access to ANY ISP, Just because you can't get fast Broadband doesn't mean that you can apply to the RBS.
