there's something weird about the judges openly encouraging him that he needs to lose weight to succeed. I realise that it is not healthy etc. but the judges basically say it is essential to succeed.

Don't think so, although it could have been both.

Gary had a lot of self esteem issues after TT ended as well so I think seeing someone who would possibly go through the same thing got to him.
