    hi guys, quick question.

Does anyone know whether or not I can apply for a pair of Haix boots with the DF because I have leg problems.

My Magnums aren't giving me enough support atm.

I heard that if you get a Doctor or Physio to sign off on it they'll issue you a pair. Thoughts?

You should see a doctor. Get referred to a specialist if you have an ongoing problem.

If you are injured or have a medical problem then report sick to your unit and inform them. If you need kit see a Quatermaster.

What makes you think the HAIX boot will be good for a torn ACL?.

cant be any worse than it already is...

72 hr Ex and you can apply for them in the RDF at least.

ACL tear or other illness, if incurred on army training etc, then see the medic/end up in bricins.

Injuries do not entitle us to new boots, in fact if you train on an injury without informing anyone of said injury and get found out, youre likely to get someone ELSE'S size 10 up your backside for not doing so. We have a duty of care to inform superiors, up the chain of command, if unfit for duty due to injury / illness.

The other thing to remember is that Haix are a tac boot, not a parade boot, and as such any CS worth his salt will be telling you to get back into magnums for the next parade as they are the issued parade boot.

Just to clarify, are you using magnums on the ground at present?

I use old Magnums on the ground if the weather is given good. I can't stand the Haix, feels like concrete blocks on my feet!

And to wear the Haix on parade is killer, there is no give in them at all and it makes marching difficult and ends up being sore for my legs.

But yea, get on to the CQ, the medic will only put you on LD and confine you to your billet if you are injured. Boots would make a difference.

Seriously if you've a torn ACL I'm surprised your turning in for your training night (did you say your RDF?).

You should certainly be getting that looked at.

As well as anything else, someone mentioned that the HAIX is a heavy boot - and it certainly is, although I love 'em & hate the Magnums!.

One more thing to add, if you are not currently a 3 Star, you have a snowballs chance of getting a pair of Haix. Most quatermasters are hesitant at issuing gear at the best of times, if every recruit and 2 Star was to get a pair of Haix, with the high turn over numbers in some units, it would cost a fortune as the boots retail somewhere in the region of €150

If you presented to the medic with that condition you would probably be put on LD, and told not to wear boots.

While I agree that there are better boots out there I thought there was an issue with using un-issued kit and the whole debate "are you covered should you injure yourself in self bought kit?"

    ok so...

    RDF member issued barrack magnums.

    exercise (48 hr) comes up

he now has his choice, wear the barrack boots which patently have f**k all use out on the ground or the pair of Meindl Army Pro GTX he forked out for using last years grat, which whilst not satisfying the argument, will never the less significantly reduce his chances of getting injuries to feet/lower legs.

due to this silly 72hr ex requirement, Most RDF members at least have no choice in the matter other than buying that which looks military and is a tactical boot.

    typical DF thing to do...

no no, cant wear that, its not issued, sure even thought theres a slim chance of it in such sturdy boots, if you hurt yourself we cant cover you.

no no, cant issue those, sure your only on a 48hr ex

ah sure wear the magnum, yeah good chance your gonna bust an ankle, but sure well cover you.

Get yourself a pair of Meindls or Lowas, expensive initially but they will last you for the rest of your time in the RDF as long as you look after them. They can be resoled when worn out also!

Some outdoor shops do a 10% discount for Defence Force Personnel so be sur and ask, Mahers Outdoor in Cork do on the Meindls but I have yet to see Lowas for sale anywhere in Ireland.

I find the sole on the Haix too high and the leather is too soft, no support, fine if you're getting them for free though!

Magnums are woeful yokes altogether imho!

Alt-Bergs. Very expensive but (from what I hear) well well worth it. That is, if you're interested in forking out for kit. Personally, I (largely) make do with what I'm issued. Not gucci but does the job.

    To?

Lets hope for Lowa....though the fact I just got issued Haix means I will never see a pair of whatever the new issue will be.

    dear fcuking God.

fine if all you do is ponce about on the range, utter crap if you ever have to do anything else.

    Meindls, Alt-Bergs, Lowa's or (as i've spied recently) a pair Grisport Cobra's.

this is very simple: if it looks like a pair of trainers, it is a pair of trainers.

Haha, I'd cry if that happened!
    To?

    Not sure, hopefully Lowa's.

While it's not definite, issued kit for troops was something our partners in the Nordic Battlegroup were less than impressed with and it was brought up in the AAR. So there's talk of new boots coming online, for Battlegroup personnel at least. Although it'd make no sense to just issue Battlegroup personnel new boots... But, it's the DF we're talking about so who knows. :pac:

Cheers fella. Sounds promising, but, as you said, it is the DF

GSG-9s are CRAP! They may look super gucci but you'd be better off in a pair of cardboard slippers. They are made for running around airports as opposed to any outdoorsyness.

I've been through a few different brands. Lowa trumps it for me I have the Lowa Mountain GTX and the Lowa Recce GTX amazing boots.. I've never tried the Han wags but have heard good things

Yeah, they look gucci as hell but I thought they'd be more suited to a Magnum-type role? Though would it be outside the realms of possibility that this is what we're getting for our new tac-boot?

As I said previously, I've heard good things about altbergs, anyone had a pair?
