Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. Just wondering....

What do people consider the best shooter(s) on the Dreamcast? I'm thinking about my next DC shmup and already have Mars Matrix, GigaWing, Zero Gunner 2 and Ikaruga on the Gamecube and 360.

I would put Under Defeat almost at number 1 along with Ikaruga. Go buy it now! Don't be afraid of the price :D

Get Castle Shikigami 2 while you're at it.

Under Defeat was one I was thinking about - a Ltd. Ed. went for about €80 recently on fleabay from a UK seller - the guy I bought Mars Matrix and GigaWing from. I was tempted but not prepared at that time to buy anymore games other than the two above.

I was going for a copy of Psyvariar 2 on the DC there, but the seller took it down for some reason. I was hoping to snag it at a good price as there didn't seem to be muc interest in it but its gone now :( I liked the PS2 version of Psyvariar 1 though I thought the graphics were appalling. As the DC version of the sequel looked so much better I was really keep to give that a try. Ho-hum.

I will keep an eye out for Under Defeat then. I have been considering getting Border Down as well. Looks superb!

I love the Psyvariar games I have 1 and 2 for PS2, not the DC ones though which I would like to buy one day.

My copy of Psyvariar 2 is NTSC-J and comes with an Appreciate DVD. Lovely stuff. :)

It's about the right right money although if you're spending that kind of cash and you want that game, I'd spend a touch more and get the limited edition instead. Personal preference of course.

Just looking through his feedback. He sold another sealed copy of it back in 07 for £38.50.

Bad etiquette to put it on ebay and adverts? I guess not if you cancel one depending on interest!

If he had it as a standard bidding auction, yep.

But as they're both basically buy it now, whichever goes first is what's sold.

Sounds a bit Roger Dodger to me. If that was legit then whoever bought it got a real bargain. I'd still save up a bit more and go for the limited edition version instead though.

You're way too paranoid for your own good :p

It was legit alright. Someone just got a bargain.

Then again, it was back in 07. The game came out in 06. So more than likely it just wasn't as desirable back then.

Never really was one for limited edition stuff myself. I like genuinely rare things. Not things that are limited in number with the soul purpose of making them rare. Always seemed a tad silly to me.

Agreed but in this instance I prefer the limited version for the extra goodies.

Talking of limited editions I did land a nice near-mint copy of Cyberbots for the Sega Saturn over the weekend. :D

Just playing some Jap shmup goodness there via the Jtag (BIG thanks to Doc): Akai Katana, Ketsui, Raiden IV. Raiden IV is class, the Raiden series has become my favourite games at the moment - great gameplay, gorgeous graphics and awesome soundtracks. :D

eBay or Videogameimports are my usual haunts for Shooting Gameside. Can't read a jot of them, they cost the Earth, but they look nice and have fun pictures. It's worth the ridiculous price to a SHMUP collector. :)

This looks interesting (video embed at link, featuring developer wearing a weird hat!): http://kotaku.com/5844774/another-look-at-the-only-guitar+controlled-backwards-space+shooter

Basically a shmup that's controlled by a guitar controller. But that's not enough. So the whole thing is played with time flowing backwards, and your goal is to not kill the enemies by trying to collect the bullets you fire before you fire them.

Or something. Time travel. It's confusing.

Anyone know if Raiden Fighters Aces will ever get released ?
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/pqube-Raiden-Fighters-Xbox-360/dp/B003JH7O3C/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1317288530&sr=8-1

    I bought/pre-ordered it like a bloody year ago :(

I have a Jap 360 and all the main shmups (including ACES) but would like to sell it if i can get enough PAL shmups.

It's the duke nukem forever of shmups. I downloaded a video preview of it over 4 years ago and it's been announced and delayed for over 2 years now.

Hah that's freaky, I was only playing this last night (the Jap version). It's pretty cool getting the 3 games in one.

Apparently the PAL release is delayed indefinitely. I recall reading somewhere recently that a Swedish publisher has the rights to release the title but is having licensing difficulties, or something along those lines. I doubt we'll ever see it to be honest. :(

It could be Microsofts anti 2D policy as well. Look how hard it was for Treasure to get Radiant Silvergun on XBLA.

I had Raiden pre-ordered from Play as they listed it as being up for release this Friday. However, no money has been taken from my credit card and they have changed the release date on the site to "coming soon" or something. I'm very annoyed as I've been wanting this game for ages :(

Hopefully it will arrive at some point, but its not looking too good tonight. Perhaps it will be released on the continent? The ever reliable *cough* Wikipedia has it as being released in the EU on the 27th of September.

I had Raiden Fighters Aces pre-ordered too and just cancelled it earlier this year. It's never coming. Buy an NTSC copy. :(

He can trump that with his vastly superior xbox on a candy cab version. :P

Shmups on touch screen devices? Nicely done but no thanks. Unless you can plug an arcade stick into it. Or maybe get a pad hack for it! :pac:

Was playing some Akai Katana Shin last night, feckin great game.

I was surprised at how well the touch control Cave shmups work. And there's a newly purchased Ipad in the house now so I might try to install a Cave game or two when no-one's looking :P

But given that all the iOS games are available on 360 now (except Bug Panic?), they're more a novelty rather than the optimal way to play. Still, would be nice to rip out Death Smiles for a credit or two on the long commute home :)

Touch controls really don't do anything for me at all. I tried out R-TYPE on my phone. Game runs fine and looks great, but the controls are a pain. Half the time I'm just trying to work out what my fingers are obscuring on the screen.

I watched a film called Suicide Club last week, and there was an... interesting scene involving chopping boards and fingers. Don't remind me about it :pac:

Anyway, finally got a chance to try out the various lite Cave games on an Ipad this morning. Espgaluda 2 came out least favourably - the game / scoring system is just too manic and demanding, dependent on split second decisions, and the virtual controls and buttons seem awkward coming from a stick. Still plays and looks great, though. Death Smiles is grand (benefits from being horizontal view) and the extras are nice if far from game-changing. Bug Panic is interesting but damaged by dual virtual sticks. But DoDonPachi is great, can't wait for some time with the 360 version.

Far from sold, though. A nice novelty, and they work, but still feels like a significant second best coming straight from a joystick! 9.99 is a bit much per game considering.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,328 ✭✭✭Pyongyang

I bought the entire Cave iPad/iPhone library a while ago. Cave had a sale on earlier this year so I nabbed the back catalog for between 99c and €3 per title (approx). When Deathsmiles was released on iPad, Cave had a launch sale price for it for around 4 days I think. Nabbed it then but would have thought twice at full price. As you say, they are great for casual commute action, but a bit on the pricey side at full whack.

I confess to not really liking Bug Panic very much. Cave should stick to their niche!

I don't know, Nin2Jump was a pleasantly distracting change of pace. Would like to see a few more small experiments like that.

I think Bug Panic purely suffers from being a twin stick shooter on a device not built for them. Plus the fact that it's a far less engaging TSS than the likes of Geometry Wars or Bangai-O offer.
