Playing DDPR on Novice to try and get a hold on the scoring system.

Discovered that it has a nasty trick up it's sleeve when you ahem 1CC it. But it's a trick that makes score attacking almost transcendent.

Nice one, mines still in the wrapper! Spent last night playing Puzzle de Pon for 3 hours clearing all 39 rounds.

Took a break and 4cc'd (hey those count too! :D) Raycrisis. Slowly but surely getting better at that game. Having trouble in the 3rd area though with the boss that shoots those black holes at you. No matter where you move round the screen they always seem to suck you in to them. No idea how to get past that without a couple of credits yet.

I never really appreciated Raycrisis on the PS1. It's only when I have it running on my G-Net board that, I dunno, it just feels different somehow. I'll have to fire up my PS1 copy and check for differences.

How old are those games? They seem a bit too new for Mame to be interested in them.

All that'll happen is that there'll be unofficial versions which support the game. Pointless waste of time & effort by Cave. You can't delete information off the internet...

Aye. You can understand them doing it though. Once out there it's impossible to contain so the C&D does seem a bit pointless. Just standard practice though.

I can totally see why they'd want to do it, it's just a fruitless waste of time at this stage though. I'd actually argue it does more damage than leaving it alone...now it's going to be all over emulation news & scene sites, publicizing the fact Mame can now emulate the games. Sure most would know already, but now everyone knows.

In fairness all those games are still easily commercially available to consumers both in Japan and abroad.

It's only natural they try and protect themselves somehow.

Nobody is saying otherwise though. I maintain its a pointless exercise, & only makes more people aware of it. All that will happen is Mame will now remove the games, & a few minutes later someone re-compiles it with the games re-enabled & sticks it up on the net, where it propagates to infinity. It's happened before, & will no doubt happen again. Sony also thought information could be deleted off the internet, all it does is circulate, & with the added attention, that circle gets bigger.

What does surprise me is Mame allowing this to happen, normally their very tight on emulating games within certain time limits. Five years was the unofficial stance, but they used to mention not doing it while a game was commercially viable also.

Spent a half an hour playing Dodonpachi this morning on the Ikea Cab, hmmm, I suck at it but wow, such pretty colours!

Must see about loading some more similar vintage Cave shooters on there.
It's a crusty old lappy within but it handles the above and Garegga so we'll see.

Nice work! The thing I like about Cave titles, or a lot of non-conforming shooting games is working out the scoring systems. Once you have those nailed you can really sink your teeth in to the good stuff and go for the score attacks!

Just stumbled upon an awesome looking new XBLA shooting game today. Check out the development blog for Snoppies Attack!

That looks pretty interesting, will keep an eye out.

Pity there's such a lack of good original shmups on XBLA in general, Omega V is the only really good original game I can think of.

This might be the first Cave iOS title I'll pass on. The XBOX 360 version is just too good.

Wait, I'm confused. What the heck is that trailer even for?! A Futari port, maybe? But why did they show all the Bug Panic stuff? And why the new name?

    Confusion reigns, yo.

Also, getting rather addicted to Arrange B in DDPR once I finally understood what was going on. Hmm... white bees...

That video above didn't play for me. Is this the same thing - Mushi Bug Panic? Apparently some new game featuring Bug Princess Reco from Futari.

Nah Bug Panic has been out a while. It's a strange dual stick shooter majig. Only played the trial version, and its OK but not the old school shooters we know and love. Screw Cave and their 'new ideas' :P

The new game either seems to be a sequel to that or a port of Mushi Futari 1.5. Or some bizarre hybrid of the two. Who knows?

Ah fair enough. Maybe they're trying to appeal to more mainstream folk, Geometry Wars crowd maybe, or it just suits iOS devices better.

So what's Arrange B all about in DDPR then? Any tuts online to say how it works or are you better off trying to figure it out yourself?

I don't begrudge them at all for new ideas, although am more of a purist myself. Nin2Jump was a delightful distraction, I must say.

I found a general guide online here which definitely helps: http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?t=34382 Definitely need to figure out some of the eccentricities on your own though.

Basically - you play it on an individual level by level basis - your free to play them in whatever order, or just spam one again and again. Each level has its own score which is then added to your grand total.

Twist is the more you play, the higher the scoring possibilities. As you kill enemies and complete the level again and again, various gauges increase which alters the density of budgets but also invites greater scoring opportunities. The 'bees' and various other factors also induce a colour-coding system that further alters the bullet density: if you get a green bee, the screen turns blue (or red, I forget which one). But if you get a bee while its flashing (or, alternatively, beat your own high score) you provoke 'green' uber mode - which is obviously super hard but also allows for ludicrous levels of bullet cancelling. The mid-bosses and bosses are basically goldmines of 'expert items' when you go into hyper mode (which recharges quickly but doesn't last very long). You can die as many times as you want, but you suffer small score decreases, and death reverts you back to 'normal' mode and its pitiful bullet patterns :( You can also choose from three ship customisation options. Hyper is the handiest - the alt option further decreases your hyper time to a matter of seconds, but gives you a brief period of invincibility where you can split bullets. You also rapid fire automatically, only using buttons to switch to laser or activate hyper / bomb (tied to the same button, which has led to some disappointment at key junctures).

It's strange and very different to standard mode, but since a run only lasts a few minutes its fiendishly addictive. I'm focusing on level one and two with an eye for moving up.

My shooting Historica v3 ships arrived today. They've been both a joy and a nightmare :D

I put the In The Hunt Sub together first. Took less than five minutes. Thought this was going to be an easy task.

Then spent about an hour trying to figure out how the hell the Raiden and Souky ships worked. I basically had bags of tiny parts with no instructions to go by.

Some others, like the Wolf Fang dude, have ball and socket joints that need so much pressure to put together that they could break in the process.

The finished results look absolutely brilliant. But they're really not for people who lack patience, so be warned if you want to buy some!

They look class dude. Love the Raiden and In The Hunt ones especially. I better give them a miss though as I'd lose patience and break the Raiden one knowing my luck. :)

Yeah the Raiden one really was especially difficult. It has a good few moving parts which expand out like when the ship upgrades in the game. Trying to figure out where they all go was crazy. Nice when it finally came together though :)

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 10,498 Mod ✭✭✭✭Andrew76

Do they normally come with instructions do you know? If boxed or whatever.

My ones came in a big bag with loads of smaller bags. Each ship was bagged individually with its parts.

Then there was a little leaflet just with pictures of the ships assembled and lots of Japanese writing. So assembly was really just trial and error.

I don't think that's the way they're meant to be sold though. I know pyongyangs one came boxed properly and you can get collections of them which are all boxed.

The reason I got my ones as they were is because he was the only dude selling volume 3 for cheap anymore - which is the one with Raiden.

This guy has a boxed complete version of 12 ships (they have the player 2 blue variants of each one too) but it's pretty expensive. As it's boxed it might have instructions though.

I got a massive MAME pack and am just browsing through loads of different shooters. Anyone ever heard of 'The Game Paradise - Master of Shooting!'? It's so weird!

Just played the first level, but the scrolling background is an arcade full of candy cabs running games. Real 'wtf?!' stuff.

Just had a go of it on the candy after you mentioned it.

It's a bit of a weird one all right but kind of cool with all the candies in the background.

Apparently it came out on the Saturn but its called "Game Tengoku - The Master of Shooting" on that.

Game Tengoku is a PARODY shooting game that features characters from Jaleco's previous games such as Exerion, Plus Alpha, Buta-san, Momoko 120%, and Formation Z.

To clear up the confusion: apparently the new Cave iOS game is the original Mushimesama. No Futari, no Bug Panicing, just a name change to appeal to a Japanaphobic audience!

Woke up this morning to find this in my inbox:

    @GAMESIDE favorited your Tweet:

    @Gameside 素晴らしい!新しい#ShootingGameSideマガジン!私は、彼らが英語もでだったらいいのに。 :(
Nov 25, 9:46 AM via web

Then it got even funnererer when this happened:

    @GAMESIDE is now following you

Why is that cool? Well, firstly because it's GameSide, so yay, but mainly because (using Google Translate of course!) I sent a tweet to GameSide saying I love the Shooting GameSide magazines but I wish they were available in English.

Looks like they acknowledged and liked it. Let's hope and pray they act on it and we get our fave magazine we can't read in English!

By the way, Vol. 0 is out now, got my copy on the way. Looks like another top notch issue!

Thats actually being played in Ketsui mode; i.e. its taking the music, scoring etc from Ketsui and overlaying it onto Dodonpachi.

I fupping hate when developers add ****ty filtering to perfectly gorgeous sprite art. Valkyrie Profile on PSP is ruined by some awful bilinear filtering on top of some of the best 32-bit pixel art.

Agreed. Even the SLG can't help the Taito Memories discs. It just looks plain awful.

It put me off playing Metal Black something chronic, so I am going to buy a copy for the Saturn instead and play that. Those PS2 discs are a pile of old, smelly bum.

Thanks for the explanation! I did think it was too overkill as you couldnt see the background, but that explains it.

This is sort of like my first time playing Super Mario Bros 2 as a kid,
