Am I wrong in assuming much of the pen, ink and colouring on art such as that is done one handed?

I didn't realise Saidaioujou was a region free release until browsing the shmups forum today.

I'm tempted but I thought Dai-fukkatsu was weak in comparison to previous DDP games. The art work on the LE really is appalling. Why can't Cave just stay away from that style.

I did enjoy BL a lot more that the original alright. Had a look at a few videos of Saidioujou on youtube and it does look like a lot of fun.

Still waiting for my LE. I cancelled the SLE, price just doesn't justify the extras I think. Got SL10LE on the way too!

SDOJ is a superb game, lots of fun PCB memories, you chaps and chappesses should enjoy it! :)

Hooked up hyperspin to the cab for the first time in a while yesterday. Played a few shmups.
    All beginning with "D"

Daioh - Christ I found this game tough. Having to restart sections when you die just adds to the difficultly.

Darius Gaiden- wanted to like this side scroller but ccouldn't get into it at all. I think playing too many bullet hell games for a good while makes it hard to transition back to the shooters that have less bullets and require more pattern memory.

Dimahoo - my favourite of the three although I'm still not sure what the game mechanics are! Been on my list a while now to try. First few levels were easy enough but they ramp up after that.

Had a blast of Mushihime-sama via Hyperspin on the AWSD this morning, a real blast.
Then I played Raiden Fighters Jet, and realised that Mushihime really doesn't hold a candle to it, imho...

It's a funny one isn't it? I've been going through the opposite since putting Ibara in the cab yesterday. Previously had been playing tonnes of Raiden 2 for the last few weeks. Even playing it for that length of time, I still get caught by the odd tank bullet on level 1...it never really gets 'easy'.

It's really strange going from that to Ibara's slow bullets. Which is a lot easier
in comparison believe it or not.

So you got hyperspin up and running? Fantastic! I remember seeing that running before on Andrew76s AWSD - it really suits the cabinet.

+1 on Raiden Fighters Jet. Brilliant game. Maybe stick to earlier Cave titles if you rather that type of gameplay, like the original DoDonPachi and maybe Progear?

Or else skip on over to Raizing for some Battle Garegga and Armed Police
    Batrider :)

Anyway, enjoy dude - still waiting to see pics of that cab in your house! :pac:

Interesting. Raiden Fighters Jet isn't showing in Hyperspin for me. I must be missing the wheel or theme art. That's the worst of Hyperspin.

Doesn't it just use a default wheel/art in that case?

I have mine set to only show if wheel and theme art for the game is present. That way it keeps hyperspin neater and more complete looking however if overlooks many games then

    I
    Don't
    Know
    What
    You
    Mean!

I just poked it with with a stick and saw what changed, kept it up over a week until it seemed to work.
    Then stopped poking it!

Since then, any further poking has led to things not working.
    So, no more poking.
It can stay as it is..

Actually, I used am xml builder a lot, to get my other formats working, didn't worry about the screen shots, more important that I could access the infernal games!
I did have fun getting the Cave games and art integrated, just a matter of putting the right art with the right filename into the right folder.
I may have had this knowledge surgically removed afterwards, so I can't try to "improve" things and bollock it all up.

Gonna have to go out there and say Ketsuipachi is one of the best I've played! the scoring system is unreal! I think its only on the jap DDP version.

Anyone heard of a side scroller in the style of rtype called Rezon?

Checking out some vids, looks great.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 616 ✭✭✭Casey120

Nasty and tough R-Type clone, I had a hard time with it as you have to memorize most of the later levels to get anywhere .
Endless repeating loops of music got on my nerves, never played it again

Don't think there ever was a console port released .

    Just registered at pcenginecjfshjuverhblop0fdbko!

Spent most of the train journey trying to remember what games I actually have. :o

46 out of 110 STG's isn't a bad start! Anyone else registered there? It is an eye opener when you try to go through stuff!

    http://www.pcedaisakusen.net/2/33/575/show-user.htm

Should be 111 STG's though as I don't think Dino Force is listed. Though there is only one known copy in existence afaik so I guess it's not worth adding?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 33,733 ✭✭✭✭Myrddin

What on earth is an STG? :o

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,214 ✭✭✭STG.Otaku

...talking of Dino Force, here is a video of the prototype. Not sure if this guy is the original owner of it. It was for sale earlier this year for €10,000 so it may be as I remember the original clip was about 30 secs long...

The original acronym for shooting games (ShooTing Game aka shi-yu-ti-n-gu gaemu) which originated in Japan. We call them SHMUPs but STG was coined before that term. :)

Nice read. Is Ikaruga really considered the poster child for the bullet hell genre though? Surprised if that's the case. DoDonPachi or another of the Cave games sure, or Garegga etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 616 ✭✭✭Casey120

I like to think Batsugun was the first to be considered Danmaku .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,920 ✭✭✭TechnoFreek

Yeah. Dont get the Ikaruga reference either bit im not too familiar with that game or its history.

The article does refer to Batsugun alright

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,997 ✭✭✭Shapey Fiend

I definitely still love CRTs but I'm hearing great things about the Micomsoft Framemeister. At 500 bucks there's no way I'm going for one but I'm sure something aproximate will be available in software for emulation. Easier than modding a NES or PC Engine for RGB at any rate. When you're sitting 8 feet back from the TV it doesn't need to be perfect. It's hard to capture these things in youtube videos you really need to see it in person.

Batsugun is the one I always heard name checked as the birth of bullet hell. It's a bit of an arbitrary subset of shmup genre anyway. It's like trying to pinpoint the first game that's a shmup and not a shooter.
