I suppose its somewhat relevent, but a new jtag method/procedure has been discovered...works on all recent dashboards & consoles...including slims  Might want to rethink your plans Steve, a slim would be betrter suited to life in a cab with its lower heat generation.

The hack is brand new, & looks like there's a small pcb called a c-mod needed too...but in theory there's no reason why they can't be sata modded too.

That's great news! Time to plan an appointment with The Doc. :D

Actually, this new method for the Slim, will it eventually allow XBL access or will it still require keeping the console disconnected?

I'm still toying with ideas for what to do to play NTSC-J games. Nice to see a new avenue though!

Well at the moment it will only allow application access for stuff designed with xlib, so no running your legitimate backups (as if there is such a thing ) just yet. It'll happen sooner or later though, so yeah, nice to see I guess.

XBL will be as locked down as ever, & rightly so. Modified consoles & retail consoles just don't mix, especially when folks are paying for a legit service...its just too big a bite of the pie in my books :)

Very interesting. Do you thing it could be soon enough before current jtag functionality is a reality on slims?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,894 ✭✭✭Steve X2

That would be great if I could use a slim inside.

I have one at the moment and they are so quiet and don't get nearly as hot as the older style. I've been running my slim all day hooked up to the candy with a few fighters playing and it's still fairly cool.

Inside the 360 case it's 45°C and the outer shell is 21°C so that's fairly good for a 360 that's been running for 10 hours(that's game time and not just idle on the dashboard). I used a good laser thermometer so the temps are accurate.

Basically what I want is a 360 that I can install my games onto without the need to have the disc in and for it to be region free. I don't really care so much if it plays "backups" as any games I'll be running in the cab will be ones I've bought anyway.

Some more non-retro goodies arrived this morning. :)

    Ketsui Extra

Guide book thing looks cool, although I can't understand a word of it. :pac:

Oh my God you lucky thing! I have Ketsui too (in preparation for an NTSC-J XBOX 360), but not the extra documentation. I hate you! (In the platonic sense of course).

As for Raiden IV, well, what needs to be said other than a hearty congratulations and a manly, yet not too overbearing, handshake to thee. Well done! :)

Have you considered adding to the Raiden collection you've started now? Maybe Raiden DX? That's a chunky one, well worth the few bob.

In other dirty SHMUP notifications, some packages arrived for me today. A couple of cheeky ones bustling about in those I hope. Photos tonight.

And in final peddled top shelf SHMUP smut, I just put my order in for a MAK Strike Supergun to go with my MVS-1A. Toying with getting an LVK8000 too for HDMI output from my PSP>TV. We'll see...

Sorry but I have to post again to reiterate just how gorgeous that Ketsui pamphlet is and how bloody envious I am! Congratulations mate. A lovely purchase. :)

Hehe cheers dude. Must have a look to see if there's an English translation of it somewhere online. Will look into Raiden DX as I'm not familiar with that one. Would love an original Raiden II but no way am I going to rotate my monitor for it.

Raiden DX isn't so much a new game as an expanded version of Raiden 2. There's a training stage and an expert mode. If you have a modded PS1 there was a Japanese release of it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,328 ✭✭✭Pyongyang

Yep I like DX as it has those home-exclusive features and a tate option. Cheeky, fun little game.

Nice to see the OST as part of the pack there too by the way with your copy of IV.

Haven't put them on yet this morning. :)
I have The Raiden Project knocking about in some format (:P) so that will do me for a Raiden II fix for now.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,328 ✭✭✭Pyongyang

HAH! No I mean try the Google Goggles app on your phone, if you have access to a smartphone. You can snap pictures of text and it will use Google Translate.

Worth a shot. I'm going to try it with my copies of Shooting Gameside Vol.1 and Vol.2 (yes Steve SI I said Vol.1 :D).

If your wee looks pink like the laser whip you should probably be off to the doctor as soon as possible.

    Nice!

As a matter of interest, does the wife give you any stick over just collecting shmup?

Any time I get a new one I get all excited, my girlfriend sits down to watch...and then she just turns to me in disappointment and says -

'But that's just the exact same as Ikaruga'

    :(

I suppose I can take some solace in the fact that she now knows what Ikaruga is.

Girlfriends and wives come around eventually.

My girlfriend has no interest in these things and wasn't that happy with my new candy at first. Then the other morning I was in bed and she was up and I could here Puzzle Bobble going on the candy.
The next day we played a 2 player of Metal Slug 3 and completed the whole thing on 2 player mode.

Now she likes the look of it and all is well with the world (until I get my second one in a month or two :D )

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,328 ✭✭✭Pyongyang

Not really. She just thinks I'm odd. She loves the original Bomberman on the PC Engine and Super Tetris on the DS though. Other than that she has no interest in video games at all. Though she understands I'm OCD about SHMUPS so hurrah for that. :)

As for Darius Burst, I cannot wait to get that home and play it tonight. I forgot to throw my PSP in my satchel last night in the hopes it would arrive today or tomorrow. Argh!

    Awh, that's excellent :D

I do get an insane amount of joy whenever my girlfriend shows any kind of interest in games. It's pretty sad.

She's an absolute beast at the drums in Guitar Hero. Actually I bought her a mic stand so she can play and sing at the same time. She has the 1337 sk1llz.

If I could get her playing shmups at the same talent level I'd probably have a nerdgasm.

Let's put it this way, in terms of SHMUP smut, Radiant Silvergun would be somewhere in the region of Kelly Brook, not Linda Martin and her saggy neckskin.

I'm not sure where Cho Aniki would rank though. :pac:

Hey now, you could wrap that neck skin around you for warmth or use it for storage so there is something to be said for Linda Martin.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,328 ✭✭✭Pyongyang

Hmm OK, I'll give you that one, her neckskin 'dances' like a swan floating across a moonlit lake somewhere between Skerries and that chip shop in Balrothery that looks like a Laundromat.

As much as I love Silvergun, I prefer Soukyugurentai on the Saturn. Its got it all - stunning visuals, addictive gameplay, amazing level designs and The Best Soundtack in the History of Shmuppery

    So there :p

    So there :p

Hmm... Just a sec...let me just get changed in to my smoking jacket, pour a fine aged Laphroaigh and light up a robusto H. Upmann.

*puts on a relaxing Jazz vinyl LP*

What we have here is my ever expanding SHMUP collection, please, I beg of you, allow me to 'puh-rooze' my library for just a few precious moments...

    *flip flip flip*

Ah yes! Soukyugurentai for the Sega Saturn. The usual refinements can be found here. Cello wrapped, SC-OCD, NTSC-J and so on. A true choice for the discerning 'chap' and a lover of good taste.

The disc itself is made from the very finest Columbian extruded polyvinyl. The manual is lovingly hand crafted by some of the finest printing mechanisms on the planet, Pantone compliant colours sensuously fuse themselves against their Mecca, that is the very finest 100g papier cut from mighty trunks that once engulfed the rain forests of Java.

Indeed, this is a welcome, homely addition to my collection.

    *sniff sniff*

Mmmmmm! The smell.......of nostalgia! The heady scent....of investment!

BLAST! I couldn't play Darius Burst last night. My PSP 1003 has 2.xx firmware (I forget off the top of my head) and to play it it requires a 6.XX firmware update.

I decided not to touch it and wait it out as I have a Pandora battery on the way to me. Is that the best bet though? Or can I update the firmware and downgrade it later when the Pandora battery arrives?

Bit disappointed with that it has to be said. I was really looking forward to playing it last night. Instead I settled down to a bit of Iridion II on my DS Lite. :)

You've bought the game so now you can download a copy of it and play guilt free.

You don't need to hack the psp to play games any more, just download a version of the game that has been signed and it will play fine.
Not sure if you need to update the firmware for these signed files though but worth a look.

    .

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,328 ✭✭✭Pyongyang

Odd, I thought the 3000 series was still unhackable? Surely to get CF on any PSP you need to use the battery hack no?

Essentially though you're saying that signed files shoved on to an MS Duo will work on any PSP regardless?
