I think there is a fair bit of difference in that blue M5 wannabe and a well kept OEM looking M-Sport

I even have OEM M5 wheels on mine, but that is because I prefer the way they look to any other wheel out there (apart from BBS LMs) No extra badges, no M5 mirrors or grills, just a nice looking 520i with M5 wheels.

    Clean car.
But there is no such thing as M5 grills, the e39 M5 uses the M-Tech ones which were available on other late e39 too.
    Part number is the same

Theres a hero in Limerick who spent €50/60k on an '11' registered Mercedes E-class Coupe and then stuck a €25 AMG badge on the back....

Depends, Mercedes is different from BMW. Merc have the AMG package, which includes wheels, suspension, aeoridynamics and badge.

These are not necessarily twin supercharged V8/V12 and come like this from factory.
I know a guy for instance who bought a brand new e250, 4 cyl diesel from Mercedes, new and it came with the AMG pack and badge.

My bad then I take it back:o:o:o
I'm not up on Mercs really, just saw this one with a big chrome ///AMG badge on the back, then looked down to see exhausts only exiting from one side... Certainly wasn't a v8/12 so I drew my own conclusions. Pretty tacky on Mercedes part to be doing that! Imagine if Audi began shipping normal cars with RSxx badges on them, bad enough to have fools sticking them on...

hows that different from an m badge? (obviously as opposed to an m3/m5 badge)

Different because genuine ///AMG cars are usually only identified by the ///AMG badge. I'd argue that putting the same badge on a 4-cyl cal is trying to make people think its something it isn't...

Audis/BMWs with S-line/M-Tech packages have different badges to genuine RS or M cars

Yeah I think it is the same as a M badge as you are saying.

But I believe for most people AMG badge is only meant for AMG custom made cars like the e55 5L+ engines with twin superchargers etc, but obviously this is just a general badge that can be put on by Mercedes if you buy the "sport" AMG pack option.

But at the end people put amg/m badges on their cars, if they drive SE/standard models. Fine by me if they want to, but the M3/M5/RS badges on cars that are not is ridiculous, as they denote a specific model in the range and not a pack option.

    Personally I see a lot of Audi A4 1.9TDI with RS4 badges...

but again the fast mercs have their model badge, cls55, or whatever it is plus v8 or v12 badges.

AMG as with M, now denotes a trim level as opposed to the engine

Either you dont understand, or think its ok to put badges on the back of a car, in an attempt to fool people into thinking its a different car.

Its like stuffing your underpants, making people think you have something, when your really only bluffing;)

Just as an add-on to this discussion, my mother bought a brand new 530d SE spec in 2006 and it had an m badge on the boot lid, she didnt order it nor did she know what it was. She definatly wasnt stuffing her underpants.

was it an ///M5 badge, or just an ///M badge. One is ok. One is stuffing. Also different as she didn't knowingly put it on(if its an M5 badge). Doesn't make her a smartass

It was an M5 badge, it would make you wonder how many are out there that the dealer's ordered with the badges or fitted the badges before handover as a "perk" for the customer.

The dealer fitting a M5 badge on a brand new 530d, I don't believe it.
Unless your mother, and I mean no disrespect, asked for this stupidity to be done.
Again I doubt this was the case...

to be honest i couldnt give two hoots,

ive no real issue with cars with an M or AMG badge on the back if they are amg or m trimmed cars,

personally my preference is for the real thing, so in the past ive owned a couple of m3s, but i dont tend to get my knickers in a bunch either way

She didnt ask for it to be done as I specced it and ordered it for her and was there at the handover, she dosnt know what an M5 badge is and never noticed that it was there, you could have stuck a Rolls Royce Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament on the bonnet and a Mitsubishi Evo spoiler on the bootlid and she would just presume they were supposed to be there and driven on regardless.

Sorry but I don't buy that, a freshly ordered 530d, delivered brand new by a dealer with a M5 badge?
Factory workers in Germany would go on strike for less than that.

No, simply no. It did not happend.

If the car had left the factory like that then there would be a code for the badge on the options list. I'd assume that the dealer threw it on?

Yeah but then it would mean it has been ordered like this by the customer and I don't see why a dealer would put a M5 badge on a 530d, as what, free goody? Now way, I don't buy that.

I can't see any good reason for the dealer to do it myself, and I can see some very good reasons why they wouldn't. Equally, though, I don't see why gofaster s_13 would come on here and lie to us about it.

@gofaster s_13 - What did the dealer say when questioned about it?

The car came brand new from Ray Conlans in Rathangan with the unordered M5 badge on the bootlid, that's all I know, we didnt order it nor did we pay for it simple as.

But surely you questioned it? Was this car definitely a factory order and not bought from stock?

    Fair enough

    M-pack's or S-line's don't bug me (have an S-line A6 myself)

A decent body kit doesn't bug me.

A horrible body kit makes me cringe.

Sticking a M5 or RS badge on car that isn't an M or RS makes me laugh.

Sticking a M5 or RS badge on car that isn't an M or RS and at the same time leaving on the TDI or 520d badges makes me laugh and cringe at the same time.

I'm stunned at this, can you post a photo of the bootlid?

Didnt question it, just asked them to take it off(it lived for a while on my toolbox after that:D), it wasnt bought from stock as it was ordered with Xenon lights, brushed aluminium interior trim, autobox, and a few other bits and pieces.

Didnt question it(and never really thought about it till now)

Theres plenty of reasons why it could have been put there i.e. car damaged in transit and bootlid swapped from a stock car.

Doubt that tbh. (possibility of paint being the same along with the size etc of an M5 boot lid)
I wonder how it did actually get there though. TBH, I doubt the dealer knew either.

Did you get a build date on ordering - ie are you sure the car was built to your specifications? I ask this, as common spec combinations are often ordered for stock, and such a car could more easily acquire an M5 badge than a factory order for a specific customer.

There's no way they'd have done that - apart from anything else, colour tones vary from car to car. The bit I find hard to accept is that the dealer would voluntarily do something that costs time & money, offers them no benefit, and runs a good chance of having a very angry customer threatening to reject the car. As an ex-salesman, it just makes no sense. Was the car ordered with badge delete? If not, was the 530d script also present?

Don't remember getting a build date, as far as I remember we just got an estimated date when the car could be picked up.

As for parts being swapped between in stock cars, it does happen, I've seen it on several occasions. I've seen quite badly damaged new cars repaired and sold on as new.

I'll say it again, We didnt ask or care why the badge was there, we went to pick up the car and lo and behold an M5 badge which was removed on request.

M5 badge which was removed on request.

And they then gave it to you:confused:

Why wouldnt they, it was only fit for the bin after being removed, the adhesive backing on the BMW badges is a once only use.

How much time was there between ordering and collecting the car?

Repaired with new parts painted to match the car, yes. But pulling a bootlid off one new car and putting it on another would be IMO completely unthinkable.

Fair enough, but if i'd laid out sixty or seventy grand on a new car i'd be wanting a very good explanation for any hint of adventure between the factory and delivery.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,596 ✭✭✭RedorDead

Absolutely incredible that a dealer would act like that. What were they trying to achieve?

As regards the badging am I right in saying:

    M Sport = S Line = Avantgarde

M Model = RS model = AMG model

In my eyes, there is no issue with M Sport/S Line/Avantgarde badging as long as it goes with the nicer looking body design and usually bigger wheels.

Big big fail putting M or S/RS or AMG badges on any car that isnt actually one of these models. This is just muppetry.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 871 ✭✭✭savagecabbages

A poster pointed out to me that a Mercedes can come with an AMG badge from the factory if it has the AMG trim level, but not necessarily AMG mechanicals.

This was after I spotted a guy driving an E-class coupe with an AMG badge, and when I looked down found only one tailpipe, which I thought most unusual for a v8/v12 engine. I therefore branded said driver a muppet...

My apologies go out to this guy, as long as hes not going around letting on that its a real AMG. Though judging by the sovereign rings on his hand, and the goldie looking chain around his neck this is a real possibility...

You will never know what misadventure goes on between the production line and the owner taking delivery, when I was on summer hols from school and college I used to work in a certain car importers storage yard, I learned to do handbrake turns, J turns and donuts in everything from pickup's to hundred thousand pound cars(rare though, the very expensive models usually got sent straight to the dealers), so if it got away with just a badge fitted......bonus.
