Is Eircom Throttling My Upload Speeds?

This test was taken at 2am. It has made playing online games awful. Any ideas?

Speedtest ,magnet test all report the same thing. I live in a village and it's 2am so contention isn't an issue.

On the 3mbit package. The DL is fine and my upload is generally .32 or .33 but this is the first time it's happened.

I don't torrent or seed so that shouldn't be an issue. My last couple of months we have gone over the limit as we have 4 heavy users with a 30GB cap.

Edit: I do upload to my youtube channel which are quite heavy HD files at times ~1GB and less maybe 1 or 2 times a week.

I know this usage is far above what I should be using. But 4 users who really don't know about caps and I can't really restrict them from it TBF. But here are my monthly usages :-/throttle2.png

Contension might not be the issue but overloading your server might be

If you can get UPC mate go for it...

    Eircom are rubbish

Well my other option is Vodafone. DSL is all I can get in the village I'm in.

I dont think it will make a difference because they are basically just reselling Eircoms package...Sorry

Give them a buzz to see what they can do

Eircom won't do anything. The problem is the infrastructure, no investment in over 20 years. Eircom, and everyone else offering dsl throttle the upload speed to increase download. The wires can only handle so much capacity, and they give everyone a very low upload speed because most people are downloading.

Until someone upgrades the technology, you're stuck with what you have. As you mention you're in a village I doubt the exchange will be due for an upgrade anytime soon

You could check to see if any of the WiMax providers operate in your area. e.g Imagine, Lighthouse are in my area along with a few others. A little more expensive in the setting up, but they usually offer the same upload speed as their download, and have unlimited bandwidth options. And if you don't need a landline for the telephone you could save even more.

    Thanks for the replies.

I have been with Eircom for years now and I have had no issues with the speeds. It was always 2.63 download and .33 upload. i hope this is a temporary thing. Also I dunno about wireless as I primarily use the broadband for gaming. I mentioned Vodafone as they are cheaper. I think I am the only Eircom customer in my village as everyone went to vodafone in the last few months but I didn't as I literally had 0 problems besides new routers ect so I felt that it might be dodgy switching ISP's. Hopefully didn't make a big mistake...

TBH, if you're happy with the price and service then stick with them. It might be useful to contact them re the exceptionally slow upload. I'd also mention the Vodafone deal and see if they'll offer you a discount to stop you moving away.

    Thanks for the reply.

    DownStream Connection Speed 3072 kbps
    UpStream Connection Speed 384 kbps

And I cant get higher than 3mb BTW due to being a good distance from the exchange.

Just letting ye know that thy are syncing at the correct speeds and a couple of modem cycles later but to no avail :-/

    I just want to GAME !!!! :D

I'm not a gamer myself, but I'd say you could do with a better upload speed than anything DSL can currently offer. If you check out someone like Lightnet for your area, you'll get at least three times the upload which I'm sure would make a huge difference to your gaming experience.

Depends how much of Piratebay and Redtube/YouPorn you frequent, really

Well I'm happy with Eircom as the upload was fine for 5 years ! And extra latency with Wimax. I dunno :S Maybe I will if this doesn't get sussed out

This was taken after 4+ router cycles just a while ago. 7:45 am.

    throttle3.png

Upload speed is 1/11th of what I normally get. And can't play on Xbox :-/

Just checked a client that is using a radio signal latency is 26ms, less than half the latency you're currently experiencing. They're getting a 4mb download with a 2mb upload, and no limits subject to fair use policy.

I've yet to see any Eircom connection break the 50ms latency.

I know you say you're happy with Eircom, but doesn't look like you should be

Wow, Eircom can exceed 50ms latency! Shame that they're throttling me to 2mb on a 3mb contract (apparently its because of my distance from the exchange). Wonder how the Cliffs of Moher manage to get NGB and the rest of us are on the old dsl connection?

Well the pings are far worse than usual. I can ping to Dublin and get 19ms and England I get like 30-40. Pinging 50ms to Dublin may be as a result of poor upload speed. And I get an A+ result on pingtest. Well I'm going to look into Wimax today.

Cycling your router probably isn't going to do much, looks like the problem is further up the line. Give Eircom a call.

I found this crowd, if they don't cover your area they probably know who does. There is also Cork community Broadband, but their limits are quite low, especially based on your usage. Also try contacting the County Council they might be able to point you in some good directions.

    Good luck

I must be 1km outside the range for AHC ^_^ I'll ring Cork CoCo later so. And my friend has Cork Community Broadband and he finds it great but the caps are meh :-/ I'd love to stay with Eircom but a decent upload/download ratio with low pings is what I need for gaming.

Know where you're at with Eircom, but sometimes they just don't cut it. Any potential provider should be able to provide an idea of their average latency. If they don't have that figure easily to hand, they may not be worth the effort. ;)

How was it resolved Eoin? I've just moved back to eircom after years with another provider and my upload speed has collapsed from 512kbps to 77kpbs. Inexplicably. I was on to eircom and they say the problem is at my end rather than the line or with their settings. I've cycled the modem/router several times etc. etc. This happened literally overnight. I'm on the 8MB NGB product. Any help / suggestions welcome ...
