Thanks for the replys. I'm pretty shocked that the Maryborough are not passing it on. I thought they had a good reputation and would have wanted to maintain it.

The issue about increased costs is complete nonsense - inflation is the lowest its been in 20 years. And their prices went up from last year as well to account for inflation so that's complete rubbish.

Very greedy if you ask me.

Oh well we'll knock that hotel off the list and we'll keep looking.

I have read this forum about the decrease, I signed contract in January paid 2k deposit, was due to get Married in May just gone but had to post bone until October. Would it apply to me. I'm in the UK and am unsure on howto approach the Hotel!! Your help would be greatly appreciated.

I just signed our contract with Summerhill Hotel. We booked and paid our deposit before the VAT reduction but only just signed our contract. The VAT reduction was applied on the contract (to the food portion of the package cost), without us saying anything at all. Got a good amount off too so was quite pleased :)

I just noticed the first post again. Are bands supposed to be offering the lower rate of VAT too? (I don't live in Ireland so haven't a clue :)). I've booked our band and paid the deposit but haven't thought about the price going down due to VAT.

I see that the first post mentions cake as well but I haven't ordered ours yet so I don't need to worry about that one.

If your price per head is around €29 that would be correct by my calculations (I could be wrong).

Our per head is 40 EURO! How do you work it out?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73 ✭✭the Lamb Post

Take your original cost and divide it by 113.5, then multiply it by 109.

But you have to remember that the reduction is not off drink, so if you have drink included in your package then you won't be receiving the full reduction.

    i.e. €40 divided by 113.5 = 0.35242
    then multiply by 109 = €38.41

Total reduction should be €1.59. But if there is drink in the package you'll find the hotel will round off and keep the 59c and pass on the €1.

I wrote to our hotel today, I basically added it as a query onto the end of a letter clarifying some of the terms & conditions.

I just mentioned the reduction, calculated the "new" rate per person and asked them to verify that my calculations were correct. Will report back with their reply.

    Hi,

Just letting you know that the Vat reduction was passed on to me on everything except for the wine which was included in our package.

Worked out at approx 3% saving overall.

but the VAT reduction might only apply to the food portion of your package - not to the whole cost.

Anyone know if Killashee House hotel Naas are passing on the reductions?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,040 ✭✭✭Theboinkmaster

Most poeple are getting the reduction, read this thread and then contact your hotel and demand it - be polite but firm.

We checked out Killashee just a couple of weeks ago. They did pass on reduction, the wedding coordinator mentioned it when she did an estimate for us. So if they don't mention it to you, just ask...

are you sure ? I know a Friend who has booked there and they havent passed on a reduction.

if you were only "checking it out" its easy for them to say they passed on the reduction as you have nothing to base it against.

Bands and entertainers are liable at the standard rate (21%) so there will be no reduction there.

We enquired with Lough Rynn in Leitrim about the vat reduction only to be told that because there's more demand for the venue it has increased its princes to cancel out the vat reduction.

    Chancers.

    @D3PO - Yes, I agree, you did.

My post was to show that the VAT reduction didn't actually apply to bands which the OP seemed to imply when they started the thread.

Yep, looks like I got my wires crossed, think had a different place in mind that mentioned reductions. Killashee house didn't say it to us one way or another.
I stand to be corrected, but I think it may have been Castle Oaks hotel that said they were reducing rates in accordance with VAT.

That's fair enough they're completely entitled to increase their prices if they want. However if you've already booked and signed a contract before 1 July you are entitled to a reduction for the VAT.

What i don't understand is; there was a bit of a witch hunt on Newstalk to restaurants etc who weren't passing on the reduction and some came on and complained that they couldn't due to increased costs etc and opened themselves up to attack. If that was me you just say Yes we have passed on the VAT reduction, however due to increased costs we simultaneously increased our prices which occurs in any normal business.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,301 ✭✭✭Gatica

I just think businesses need to be up-front about it. If they're increasing prices only because the VAT has dropped, then that just seems underhanded - I mean, would they increase prices if the VAT hadn't dropped? if not, then they're just making more profit while the government gives up some of that profit.
I've no problem with them increasing prices because it's more expensive to run the business now than it was a year ago. However, reports on the radio and in the papers suggest that prices from suppliers have been dropping due to the recession, so it seems unlikely that costs would have gone up, and certainly not the exact amount by which VAT has been reduced.

I got €2 per head off and €2.50 off the room rate per guest from my hotel after asking about the vat reduction a few months ago.
    Happy days!
