Lil Louis will forever be remembered as the architect of the immortal 'French Kiss' - the one with the female orgasm breakdown that got banned by the BBC but still made Number 2 in the charts.
One of house music's true originals, his classic productions still sound like they could have been made yesterday, and you can expect to hear him mixing disco, soul, electro and house tonight for your dancing pleasure.
With the recent resurgence in interest in classic Chicago and Detroit productions via reissue labels like Rush Hour, the importance of this man in the house firnament is being emphasised once again. No lesser a light than Theo Parrish had this to say about him recently:
"Lil’ Louis – I don’t know if many of you know who Lil’ Louis is. Lil’ Louis is an underground Chicago DJ. Some say the father of House music, or one of the godfathers, creators of House music"
To people of Theo's generation who grew up in Chicago, Louis' parties at the Bismarck Hotel were one of the places to be if you wanted to j-j-j-j-jack your body all night long. Regularly catering for crowds of up to 8,000 people, records would appear in the city fraudulently marked 'Remixed By Lil Louis' in order to take advantage of this huge popularity.
His own production career took off when he began working with Marshall Jefferson, helping to craft the insane throb of Hercules' '7 Ways to Jack' on the city's Dance Mania imprint. After using the mesmeric pitchshifting dynamics of 'French Kiss' as his signature DJ tune for well over a year before it's eventual release, he built up a head of steam for it that ended with it being signed to a major label and selling over 6 million copies. An album followed entitled 'From The Mind Of....', one of the few long players in the history of house that stands up as a complete LP. The more introspective 'Journey With The Lonely' appeared in 1992, featuring the timeless 'Club Lonely' and 'Music Saved My Life', which became a huge anthem at David Mancuso's Loft parties....A spell recording for Strictly Rhythm in New York followed, which produced the gospel drenched vocal stormer 'Freedom'. Since then he has flitted between the worlds of R'n'B and House whenever he sits down to produce, but remains all the way house when he spins! What else would you expect from a godfather of the genre?!
