hey guys. i put this build together thanks to monotype and tee bag on this forum with a few adjustments. i'm going to be ordering tomorrow or friday so before i do i just want to make sure all the parts will work fine together and that i'm not making any bad choices! i'm also not sure about the graphics card. is there any better ones that i should get over that 1? i can stretch to 100~ euro worth of changes if that really makes the system more future-proofed and better for overclocking (only planning on overclocking when the system can't handle new releases down the road).

here's the screen i'm thinking of getting:

    and the system:

    thanks!

Cant see the final build mate try the image maybe?

i was going to buy that very same monitor not long ago, but found this which i'll be ordering soon and its a much better screen. 120Hz is going to be much smoother and if you're interested, down the line it can do 3D with a nvidia GPU + nvidia 3D surround kit (sold seperately)

either way, 120Hz is much better than 60Hz.

Only thing I would change is the RAM. Sandy bridge prefers 1.5V RAM if possible. While the 1.65V will work, it won't play as nice. Something like this:
    http://www2.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=29694&agid=1192
    or
    http://www2.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=44322&agid=1193

would be fine. You could also save a euro by getting the tray version of the i5 instead of the box, but having the spare stock cooler hanging around is never a bad thing.

I don't know a lot about monitors, but samsung are a good brand and I can't see anything wrong with that one at first glance. It looks fine.

to use the 3D you're going to need to change out your HD6950 for a slightly lesser powered (before OC) and cheaper gtx 560Ti. (and you have to get the nvidia 3D vision kit ~€115)

If its more expensive than ordering from scan then get it at scan.co.uk??

read reviews on 60hz vs 120hz monitors and decide for yourself. personally, after reading many reviews, im going for 120hz now. even without 3D usage, 120hz should be a big improvement over 60hz by my understanding.

thanks lads! i'll keep the original final build then and add that 1.5v ram. tea bag i just read a review and it said make sure your gpu can handle the 120 hz otherwise the picture may become "jittery". any idea if the 6950 can handle it?

"The 120hz HDTV's that I've seen have all looked jittery. I mean, it looks smooth sometimes, and it's nice seeing all those frames, but the fact that it's lower hz source material converted to 120hz making it jittery is almost not worth it. I'd only get a 120hz monitor if the source material was 120hz, eg: a video card that can display native at 120hz. Other than that - I'd rather deal with 60hz and no jitteriness. "

"[Note though, video card solutions that are recommended for 60Hz 2560x1600, will not perform as well at 1920x1080 @120hz due to the amount of information that needs to be processed. In other words, it’s more taxing on a GPU to display 1920x1080 @120hz than 2560x1600 at 60hz. You will need one heck of a powerful GPU solution to see all the benefits of 1920x1080 @120hz. Beyond this resolution, at this high a refresh rate, dual link DVI will no longer have enough bandwidth to broadcast a signal to a monitor. As this point we'll have to move to a more advanced cable method like Display port (seen on a lot of the new HD 5xxx series cards).]"

a 6950 is only 2 steps down from the most powerful consumer grade GPU money can buy, so you'll be fine @120hz.

besides, those monitors can default to 60hz if you prefer. at ~the same price, i cant see why you wouldnt get the 120hz.

was looking at the games that are available in 3d and i didn't know that many were available! not sure which 560 ti would be best tbh

    would you go for
    http://www1.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=43719&agid=707

or (2gb although i never heard of palit before)
    http://www1.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=43167&agid=1156

    thanks again for the help

The Palit. Twice the memory. It is surprisingly small compared with other cards too.

Can anyone find any reviews on the 560Ti 2gb version? how new is it that it hasnt been benchmarked?

if it holds up, it would be perfect for me for a 3D surround setup. i just think the 560Ti isnt nearly as strong as the HD6950, and the GTX 570 is far more expensive. Nvidia just doesnt seem to have a card that can compete on both performance and price with the HD6950, but if you want 3D you're going to have to go Nvidia, and if you want a tripple monitor setup you need more than 1gb of Vram. aarg. even the GTX 570 "only" has 1250mb, but when you play on huge resolutions you need it, thats why i was also looking at the reduced prices on the GTX 480 1.5gb..

i found a review comparing the 6950 and 560ti 1gb versions. it mentions the 2gb versions in its conclusion.

also all good reviews from newegg

all the stuff came dismorning and was just about to start the build when i remembered i didn't order thermal paste! god damnit  thought cpu paste would have came with the i5 or at least the scythe cpu fan :L

anyone know where i can pick some up around tallaght or even the city centre?

edit: there looks like theres some paste or something like that already on the stock fan? could i use that until i get thermal paste for the cpu cooler

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 4,281 Mod ✭✭✭✭deconduo

You can just use the stock fan until you get some paste, just remember to clean it all off when you switch coolers.

need a hand with these sata connectors please lads. i don't know what devices connect to what sata connector. there are 8 connectors, 4 sets of 2 and 4 of them are ata3 (the faster ones?) and the other 4 are ataII (slower ones?)

as far as i know i have to connect my hd (using 1 sata cable) my cd drive (also using 1 sata cable) and theres an eSata port from my case (which has 2 sata cables coming from it)

so should i just connect all 4 to the 4 faster ata3 connectors? or are the pairs of 2 like ram slots so if the device does not need 2 sata cables i shouldn't use the other connector? confusing stuff!!

also i have 2 cables coming from the auto on the case. i think only 1 needs to be connected to the motherboard. should i connect the hdaudio of the ac '97 one?

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 4,281 Mod ✭✭✭✭deconduo

If you don't have any SATA3 devices then it doesn't matter which ports you connect, they should all work fine.
