how can i edit a video file?

i have a divx file. i want to cut 10 mins out in the middle of it. i don't want to do much more with the file. can anyone recommend some free software which might allow me to do that? i've tried windows movie maker but it keeps throwing errors about missing chunks and stuff.

try wax. if you have access to a mac, try and convert the video file using vlc player, and edit the converted file in imovie.
