Well people this new radio system by or police force did not stay out of boy racers hands for long. I was parked in a petrol station tonight and beside me there were lads in a car with there window opened and they were listening too this hand held radio I was kind of wondering what are they listening too so I opened my window to have a listen it was our local station calling a car about a possible section 49 which as far as i know is drink driving correct me if i am wrong. Well I was keen to were they got this radio from so I asked the driver what it was and the fool told me it was a scanner I then asked were he got it and he said ebay. Now I tought you were not able to get the gaurds on these things anymore . What this guy did not know is I am in the emergency services myself so I tought it was right to give the local station a call and give him the reg of the car so I left it at that then. Did anyone else know you can pick up the cops again ? Just wondering rolleyes.gif

I'd be very surprised if they had access to the Garda TETRA network. TINLA but if it was an analogue scanner then there's no illegal act committed as long as they don't act on information that is eavesdropped.

Two things, the Dart Can be heard in Dublin, it's a non encrypted system.

With the visit of HR Royalness, they probably have reactivated the analogue system for extra capacity and compatibility. I'd expect low security comms and day to day traffic.

Yeah you are right the new system is hackable.I doubt they would go back to there analogue system because they have removed the aerials from the cars and vans. The only areial in use is the tetra aerial.

It is not illegal to listen to any transmission in Ireland.

Personally i dont think listenting to emergency services on scanners is a big problem .There should be a problem when people are using equipment to transmitt eg pirate radio station, when they dont have a licence to.Rather than people listening to transmittions who are doing no harm at all.

Ya I know what you mean in some parts of Tralee at night you cant hear spin south west as the radio station called Beat fm with some guy called djb is jamming there singal with his station and he has been doing it for a few years now. I love to contact someone about it as he is filthy with the swearing he uses. Anyone know who the people to contact are ?

Where did this occur? Some divisions in the West haven't completed the roll out of the new TETRA digital network yet, parts of Galway and Mayo come to mind, as well as other rural counties and districts. They're due to change over in a few months time.

As gBee has said, if it's in an area that definitely has TETRA fully rolled out and training completed, then its most likely due to capacity issues due to the demand that is expected on the network in the coming weeks. It'd be non-high security stuff like Section 49s and a few car reg checks. Plenty of other systems are unencrypted, including some CCTV and security stuff which the Garda give a hand with.

So it's not really usual at the moment, in a years time, it'll be unusual as the full roll out should be completed like in the UK.

Either way it's not something that is likely to remain for the future. For the most part, no scanner can receive any TETRA signal, even if its not using the full optional encryption which was available with TETRA. Analogue and TETRA are like chalk and cheese when it comes to monitoring.

Any complaints over piracy or unauthorised use of frequencies should be referred to ComReg.

    Hi rescue16.

I know for a fact that tetra is in operation all across dublin,It wouldnt make sense to activate tetra in some areas and leave others without it.What part of dublin did this occur??What make scanner was he using and descpription on what it looked like mabye we could do some research into this.Have looked on ebay at the scanners on it but none with the power to decrypt tetra. But i have heard rumours that people have equipment to listen to emergency services garda, ambulance etc.It is only a matter of time before there is a new scanner out to listen again,The japaneese could be working on something right now hahahaha.
