Do you even need a degree to work in a library?

When you're applying for a job in a library as a library assistant the minimum requirement is your leaving certificate. Now if you're facing two candidates, one of whom only has their leaving certificate and the other has an honours degree in History and English Literature, who do you think is going to get the job?

In order to become a librarian you need to be qualified. This can be achieved either by the degree, higher diploma or masters in Information and Library Studies. The majority of staff that are studying now will do the masters as it will give them an advantage when it comes to promotion. If you don't have the qualification you can't move beyond a senior library assistant level. This is the same for all public libraries, regardless of size. If you are qualified you have the opportunity to become a librarian, senior librarian, senior executive librarian and county librarian.

Archives is an entirely separate qualification.
