How dumb is it to go to a ATM machine and then forget the money, honestly now how ****ing dumb?

You hardly go to the ATM for coffee or tea..

I've done it... Left 2 hundred smackers in the slot, rushing to get a spin in a car.
That was years ago, can't remember exactly when. If I do get reimbursed I'm just gonna laugh myself silly.

I felt like a right pleb back then though,it wasn't as if I was flush either...

    Why is it since 2003?

What if this happened you in late 2001? :o

I did it in 2001, thought that the money never came out and AIB told me it came out after I walked away. I went to the AIB Branch at the time and they had no sympathy for me.

It gets sucked back into the machine. So what... the bank should get to keep it?

I didnt think of it thought way, when I posted was thinking that the person behind you thought it was their lucky day! I apologize!

Apparently my OH got a letter sent to my parents house from AIB telling him he took money out of an ATM next to where he used to work at the end of 2007 and never got the money. They've put e21.43 in his account! That's like $45 NZD so it should get us a few drinks next time we go out :)

I got a letter last week saying that in 2003 I had left behind 40 at an ATM in limerick. I actually remember it happening, and ringing the bank IIRC.

So I'm getting a refund and 8 years of interest.

Got my refund too for 40 left behind in Crumlin shopping centre in 2003. With the interest it comes to about €48. I was drinking industrially in those days. ;):)

But I can see how easily you might walk away without it without needing to be a complete vegetable.
I heard of a case in Cork where a corn on the cob walked away from the pass maching without collecting his corn. It's not uncommon, apparently.

Maybe somebody was intoxicated at the time?

Does anyone know what would happen if you only leave some of the money behind i.e. If you selected €150 and €150 came out but you only took €100 by accident and left a €50 note ther ??

How is that possible? Think I'll take 2 fifties, but leave one of them behind.

    Yeah, you'd be €50 down.

Any money left behind is taken back by the machine, but as you say how do you only take some of the notes as the machine hands then to you as a bundle.

Your account is refunded the full €150 even though you actually took €100 from the machine because the machine can't count the money withdrawn back into the machine. You do it several more times, the bank 'cops on' and you are put on administrative leave from the Garda Siochana. :D

That is the method alleged in a recent court case as reported in the Irish Times.
Det Supt Keane said the accused “manipulated the notes and took €150” and he left the €20 in the machine’s dispensing tray.
    ...
“At that time the machine was unable to identify how much money was taken back into the machine. It is flagged as an extraordinary transaction and the full value is refunded to the account,” Det Keane said.

The 'at that time' is supposed to indicate to us that they are on the lookout for this activity nowadays I guess.

    It isn't entirely absent-mindedness.
On one occasion for myself, the dispensing rollers stopped turning too early; dragging the notes out from the machine would have likely torn the money.

Thread is from 2011. Locked for now, start a new thread in one of the Banking forums but the replies here are good enough responses, check your bank account.
