Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Weigh in in a couple of hours and am really not looking forward to it. Have been good all week and only used about 20 weeklies!! But I have been sick the last 2 days and haven't been able to get outta bed never mind exercise. I have walked 5 days this week though. I sneakily weighed myself this morning(I know I shouldn't) and it is only saying I lost 1/2 pound. I will actually cry if that's the case:(
On another note, is there anyone here on Dianette and if so have u found it more difficult to shift the weight? Im thinking of coming off it for a couple of months to see if it does my body (and diet) any good.

Heya, not on the pill but ANY contraceptive is going to cause some sort of weight issues, whether it be water retention, increase in appetite (and therefore weight gain) etc I dont think it specifically makes it harder to lose the weight though, except around the time you have a pill free week, you would probably experience more water retention.

I've had my first STS drama!! I mean what?? I was actually looking forward to weigh in as I had such good week and was waiting to see how it paid off and she was like....nothing. OMG so frustrating. 29 points a day and doubled my exercise, alot of exercise. I can't explain it? I've a big weekend ahead so I thought I'd be ahead of myself, guess not. It's just really hard when you out in SUCH an effort. Sorry for my moan. Tomorrow is a new day :)

Maggie, I could have written this post yesterday and again a few weeks ago! Yesterday in my first week since Jan I had a STS, this is probably because I drank loads! I think it was 3 weeks ago I joined the gym, had been 5 times and to 2 exercise classes and only lost half a pound! I think the only explanation is that the fat turned to muscle, so while we lost fat, we gained muscle so our weight stayed the same! Have you measured yourself? I bet you've lost inches so while it's not showing on scales body shape is changing!!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 288 ✭✭MaggieMay2

Thanks Newbee! Yea I do feel good in myself and shape is changing so I reckon I lost inches. But yea I reckon it was an exercise shock to the system and I tried loads of strenuous new things. Hopefully I'm going to keep at it and I'll see it next week. But nice to know that others have weeks like that too!!

Well had my weigh in and was up half a pound, my leader said its probably due to the anti-biotics and totm so hopefully next week I will be down!! Just have to survive a bank holiday weekend which is going to be spent on the beer ( or vodka and diet 7up!!)

  • Registered Users Posts: 276 ✭✭Boop22

After all my panicking, I actualy lost 3 pounds...I don't think I'll ever understand how my body works. I also think I need to stay away from my own scales and just stick to the WI at class:rolleyes:

Hey, yeah I think I just need to stick with it and it will eventually come off. My weight has kinda stabisilsed the last 2 yrs so i cant blame the pill for making me gain weight but I do find it a lot harder to lose it than I did a few years ago....maybe its just my age. lol :p

Sorry guys but our stand in leader said this week that unless we are in training for the 2012 olympics, fat won't turn to muscle.. The average woman or man doesnt exercise with enough intensity for that to happen!!

I know our leader said the same but I do agree that sometimes when you don't see the pounds going down on the scales you can lose inches thats why they say to measure yourself aswell.

Hi All, been so unmotivated these last two weeks that I can't even find my calculator! Not gone wild food wise just not writing it all down and guessing the portions. Have to get back on track but it is harder over the school hols when my daughter is at home and no real routine! I finally found some hovis nimble wholemeal bread, I know it has been talked about on the forum - does anybody please have the points value per slice?

    1 slice = 1 pp
    2 slices = 3 pp
    3 slices = 4 pp

Hope that helps SA expat welcome back to the fold :)

Thanks for that. The paragraph about cellulite has made me more positive because I have been thinking the last few weeks that my legs will never get rid of the cellulite and excess skin.

Had WI in yesterday and STS. I was slightly relieved and disappointed. It was the eddie rockets after a night out that ruined my otherwise good week  Had a blow out after WI because work was has been really stressful the last few days. But back on track today and looking forward to the week ahead. Just need to find time to exercise

    Guys, what is STS?

Also, I know it is relative to the cake and the cream and all, but a slice of cream birthday cake, the likes from superquinn or a bakery... all cream no substance.. what would you reckon.
I'm saying 10... but don't know. Someone else said 6.

AND, for work, I have a kitchen not a canteen, so need to bring in my own lunch ... so looking for ideas.. I dont' like sandwiches so much as there's little eating in them. They are gone before you know it! But salads are getting a tad boring..........

I've been going to WW now since 12th April and GAINED 1.5 pounds.

THIS WEEK I bought me a TRACKER book and I've commited to giving it twelve weeks.
    I'm 5'3 (squit) and 16.3 stone!!!!! and I'm 36.

This is it now...... I'm not bringing this weight with me into my 40's

So I appreciate all your help!

If I lost a Vespa Moped or a Welsh Pony for real I'd be quite dissapointed.....in terms of weight I could let it go :) I wonder who had the pleasure of weighing an elephants penis, em no thanks!!

A STS is a stay the same! For lunch I'm trying different things as much as possible and if you have a kitchen even better. Leftovers can be low in points and substantial so make extra the night before and reheat. I love having a microwave as well as sometimes I prefer a veg dish instead of salad or scrambled egg/beans on toast..... try reading a few receipes on here or the WW website for ideas? Defo requires being prepared tho.....

still here anyway!!! another disappointment, only down 0.5lbs....

i just dont understand! kept with my dailies & used some weeklies for vodka&diet 7up & hang sandwiches at a party sat night. kept up exercise, though went back to cycling & walking instead of mountain climbing and over 2ltrs water everyday!!! leader will look at my tracker next week (at my request) (i couldnt stay 2day) but i just dont feel im getting the support/advice/explanations at the meeting. i mean this is the 3rd week where ive been "whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?"(genuinely) she keeps talking about something catching up on me.. unless its dust i cant explain!

aaanyway my friend thinks im overpointing & therefore short dailies by 6-8pts (like 6points less than ive calculated ie eating approx 23 instead of 29 everyday) but would this have an effect?

keeping positive though, im eating veg almost everyday compared to almost never, my fruit intake is now daily and steady as is water intake and im more active consistently than ive ever been in my life! + + +!!!! : )

ive also ordered the kitchen scales to help with my points and portions! any1 find these useful?

Hi everyone, with a particular welcome to all the new people here :)

I'm aboslutely delighted that everyone is doing as well as they are and this thread consistenly stays on the front page of the forum which proves what an important motivational tool it's become for folk, and for that, many kudos.

BUT (there's always a but when someone with a bolded name get's involved :p) a couple of things are jumping out at me.

The last few pages have been little more than a series of "I lost x lbs!!" Now guys, that's fantastic, it really is, but how are you doing it? How are you losing the weight? Are you eating healthily or are you focussing on points and nothing more. I know I'm being a pain in the backside when I say this but this is the Nutrition and Diet forum, I have a responsibility to make sure this stays on the Nutritional side of things and doesn't descend into faddy eating, because if it does, it has to go.

It's not that long ago that we had the huge eruption about WW in the long term and how so few people keep the weight off. Well, if faddy eating is getting those lbs off then that's what will happen.

This thread is meant to be a Nutritional Motivator first, WW tracker second. Asking for points allowances on bags of fizzy cola bottles and treats?? Really?? Sorry folks but that's not what we're about.

I absolutely don't mean to single anyone out but Lainy my heart goes out to you right now - seeing weight gain from new contraceptives in utterly soul destroying, and a real catch 22. I can totally understand why you seem to have backed away from the thred a bit but lady, it's not the same without your recipes and your involvement :)

So can we please have less point loss posts and more recipes/ nutritional dicussion posts?

G'em you post inspired me to write about my experience thus far. I joined WW June 2010. I was 13syone 4lbs and by September I had lost 1stone and 2lbs. I did this my increasing my excercise and reducing my portions. I don't believe in depriving myself because thats not sustainable and if its not sustainable its not for me. I am not looking for a diet I am looking for a healtier way of living. I stopped attending in September as I started back in college 4 nights a week as well as full time work but the new habits I learned in the few months served me very well as when I rejoined this June I had only put back on 2lbs. I am down another 3.5lbs nows but more importantly for me I now eat fruit everyday and i have noticed I start to crave it. For me WW is about learning new habits and learning to make informed choices around food. I also noticed that over the years it wasn't until I became happy with myself and my body and learned to love me for who I am and what shape I am that I started shedding weight. For me this is a marathon not a sprint. Yes there I times when I would prefer to shed more but at the end of the day I can shed it next week, its keeping it off that is more important. I have a good bit to go before I reach my ideal weight according to the BMI but I am happy in myself and I enjoy shopping for clothes again. Some things I found that have helped me get to this point are:

    1. Reducing portion sizes to a healthy amount.
    2. Taking up jogging, I am doing the couch to5k programme
    3. Not depriving myself but instead thinking about my food. Am I really hungry? Do i need a cinnamon whirl or would a banana do. Most times a banana will do but sometimes I say no actually i really do want a cinnamon whirl and I have it and point it. Sometimes it is worth it.
    4. Eating fruit, especially in summer when there are peaches, plums, pears which I love.
    5. Walking places instead of driving if its less than a 30 min walk - its better for my body, my purse and the environment. I have an umbrella and a rain jacket so our weather is not a reason to stop me.
    6. This was a toughy but training myself to feel my emotions rather than forcing them down with food. This was something i did, I used to eat very mindlessly when I was lonely, Sat nights I sat in alone and stuffed food into me because I couldn't just sit there and feel it. Through counselling and self discovery I learned to feel the loneliness and not be afraid of it. I eat less now. Though I still eat emotionally sometimes.

At the end of the day there is no secret to weight loss, its basic economics, if you take in more than you spend then you have a surplus, simple. So either take in less or spend more.

Anyway thats my experience so far.

that's a wonderful post Magicmatilda, thank you :) One thing that really stood out for me:
Not depriving myself but instead thinking about my food. Am I really hungry? Do i need a cinnamon whirl or would a banana do
This, to me, is what it's relaly all about. I've been an emotional eater, a faddy eater, a dieter and everything in between in the past. But trying to change the way I think about food was been the key thing to losing weight for me. I used to see sugary snacks as a "treat" too and I'd "reward" myself with something laden with sugar and additives and crap at the end of the day. And then - over the course of a few months - I started to think, hang on, how is that rewarding myself? I feel sluggish and crap afterwards, surely I'm only doing myself harm and not good? And once you start to question that it all sort of starts falling into place.

And like you when I get a sugary craving now I kind of have to really ask myself what would satisfy it. More often than not a bowl of strawberries and some greek yoghurt will do the trick. When you reduce your intake of sugar (especially from procesed foods) your tastebuds respond in kind, and natural sugars become a lot more palatable and satisfying.

So well done for your progress so far, and keep up the awesome work and new ethic :)

g'em you've also inspired me to write about my experience!
I joined in Jan and nearly died when I saw the scales....17 10:eek: I was utterly devestated. Tried so many diets before but WW really works for me because I know that I'm going to be getting weighed every Tuesday so it encourages me to make right choices! I don't deny myself anything, if I have a treat I just up the exercise to balance it out. I can still go out at the weekends and still go for meals but it's all about making the right choices, looking at the type of dressing, sauces etc that are on the food. Also portion sizes are so so important, I can't believe the size of the dinners/lunches I used to eat before:eek::eek: So now here I am nearly 7 months later at 12stone 10.5lbs. I know I have around 2 stone more to lose but I know I can do it! It's all about being in the right frame of mind and being focused to do it! We'll all get there guys!

Oh and also I find it really helps to set mini goals, there's no point in thinking about the end result because it can be disheartening if you have a long way to go like myself! So at the moment my mini goal is to lose 5 and a half lbs by September so I'll get my 75lb cert. It helps to keep you focused, all about taking baby steps!

    Excellent post MagicMatilda!

Some people here know my history - I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure a few years ago. Since then I have been on medication for both, my husband from whom I was separated for 18 months died last year at 41 and that really threw me off my tracks, alot of guilt etc though both of us had moved on in life at the time.

When I presented myself at my Doctor in January my blood pressure was 167/105, my hba1c's which give give a good indication of diabetic control was 12.4. (BAD!!!) - my weight was 15 stone. I went home with 11 tablets to take daily and an appointment to see an endicrinologist who would be deciding on my insulin shot regime.

One of the new tabs resulted in weight gain, tried sorting it out by myself but not much joy. I joined Weightwatchers on April 21st, hit the scales at 15st 11lbs.

Met the endicrinologist end May, having lost 11 pounds, with good blood pressure, was then at 133/86, and excellent diabetic control, RESULT : no insulin shots, tablets reduced to 5 per day.

What's the difference between now and pre April 21st -

There's no need for a cattle prod to get me moving anymore! I am walking daily and sometimes twice daily, and I look forward to it!

I am eating healthier than ever in my life, I have never been much of one for pre-prepared food and the same now, I am tweaking old and new recipes to make them healthier, to use a term gleaned from Boards I am eating clean and loving it.

I am fitting into clothes better now than I did when I was at the same weight 2 years ago - 23 pounds lost to date. :D

And I'm no saint - (wish I was!) - if I'm out I will have a bit of what's on offer and I will have a few drinks.

Could I do this without WeightWatchers and the propoint system- ya I suppose I could but in a teeny part of my brain lies a little competitive streak and I like the discipline of being weighed in each week and being accountable to myself and I have a happy mental dance if I'm down even half a pound. I don't blame the WW leader for being useless if I'm up or STS and I don't blame the WW system, I know exactly where the fault lies, with myself.

For me, the health benefits of doing this have been enormous and far reaching and for that I am thankful.

Wow guys, thanks for sharing your stories. It's wonderful to hear the positivity.

My story isn't really that interesting, I had a bad few years where I was very unhappy and gained a lot of weight in a short space of time.
Got out of the bad situation, but it's taken me years (and more lbs) to get to the point where I felt happy and confident enough to actually start to lose the weight again.

WW has taught me which foods to look out for, which to eat less of, and what is good for me (to a certain extent - there are the same points in white bread and pasta as brown/wholemeal, but I will go for the healthier option every time)
I exercise quite a lot now and don't really go to WW anymore, but if it wasn't for WW I wouldn't have lost almost 3 stone, and I wouldn't be where I am today!

Amazing stories on here. I've just joined this week and wonder if anyone has any experience in doing WW on a glutenfree diet? Seems all the alternatives, gf bread etc, are more points than the regular options. I'm also missing out on WW treats and bars. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!!

Quite frankly you're not missing much! I would imagine WW is feasible on a gluten free diet though I don't have any experience of this. I expect you can't over do it on gluten free breads and other gluten free foods as it is so moderation is the key.

    Good luck with it!

Gem's post just raised something for me and that is the sustainability of Weight watchers and the pro-points plan long term. Now I'm not a knocker of Weight watchers at all - I'm doing the plan loosing consistently and not too far off my goal however my thoughts are starting to turn towards maintaining. I think I could well be one of those people who gain it back because I'm competitive and as I've mentioned before the 'game' of WW and the public weigh in mean I'm really driven to do as much as I can.
What will happen when I've won the game and there goes my motivation?
Now I have been eating healthily and exercising more than I ever have before but to be honest the thought of counting points and tracking for the rest of my life just to stay the same weight makes me feel pretty despondent. It's just so much faff with the calculator, the tracker, the eating out guide, activity points, working things out, planning what I can spend my weeklies on, always having a running total in your head etc. etc. etc. I know for a fact I can't live like that forever.
So I'm kind of thinking out loud here but I think I will keep going to Weigh In for the time being (still about a stone to loose) but I think over the next while I am going to try to phase out pointing and just try to make my healthy diet and exercise second nature and not require so much calculations and effort.

Caros great to read your post. To hear of your hbA1c coming down is fantastic and you managed to escape the insulin shots!!! Keep it up, its worth it I defo know....

I'm a type 1 diabetic and have to inject on average 4-6 times a day depending on my eating habits. I got it when I was 19 so even after 11 years it's still a learning curve. I've managed to get my hbA1c down to 7.4 which I'm delighted about. The new WW programme is suited great to us as the fruit is 0 so if I need to regulate my bloods if they're low I can grab something whereas before I had to point everything I ate so I'm not limited as before!
