Are the Chinooks still up at Dublin Airport? Are they visible from anywhere? I wouldnt mind heading up and taking a few snaps of them.

Yes they are, parked up close to the airport fire station.

Won't fit into a C-130, so something bigger would be required...

I believe it will be something bigger.

Damage is quite extensive. A front blade broken at the root. 75% of a rear blade missing. A relatively large hole in the fuselage. Severed flight controls. May not be repaired given it's age.

Maybe the Air Corps could ask to place it in their museum if it's going to be written off? Or perhaps it could become part of the air museum that was being assembled at Weston?

I can't see that happening, she is in many pieces and now packaged for her trip home.

Those aircraft were scheduled for re-construction anyway. They're not going to give them away, especially if blade replacement was on the cards.

Spot on Victor , The four aircraft were due to be broken down after this mission . What I heard was that one crew were left here awaiting parts and the others had returned to Germany and would return once the affected unit was repaired , then return to base together , I was told this on Monday by the Captain of the affected chopper . But plans may have changed since then .

C-17A just touched down in Dublin and the Chinook is nowhere near ready for transport , I'd imagine it's spare parts .

Update : diddnt see the damaged chopper , stripped down and being loaded now .

Sorry , I did NOT see it at first as they stripped it down in the old AL Commuter hanger . I only stayed long enought to see one being loaded , so not 100% what departed on C-17A.

the one with rotar damage is now enroute to the states onboard the C17, got a few snaps of her inside.

Was talking to one of the flight commanders and he confirmed that this is the last mission for those 4 aircraft. Going to do some research on them later as quite a few interesting facts were mentioned.

The Chinook flew over my house, near Swords, yesterday, amazing thing, lots of noise!

Then, about 15 mins ago heard it again, and there it was, even lower, flying west before returning right over head banking back towards the airport.

    A fantastic machine!

I suppose I can only be glad I'm not hosting a wedding in Northern Pakistan with one of these in the vicinity.

I sincerly hope that that line is not an attempt at humour. Very poor taste if it was.

Some great photos - thanks all for posting them.

Reminded me of the build up to Bill Clinton's visit to Armagh City in September 1998 - a couple of nights before he arrived, three US chinooks, two Sea Kings and a Black Hawk (White Hawk?) circled around the City, accompanied by an RAF Chinook and Puma. All the American aircraft landed over at Armagh Rugby Club, and I remember racing over to get a view.

Back then, most of the local population were pretty blasé when it came to Chinooks over Armagh!! ;)

Whats the destination for these Chinooks? Scotland?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,931 ✭✭✭sparrowcar

    Sorry that's classified ;)

Haven't a clue to be honest.

Seen the 3 of them fly over the service stations on the M1 at around 2:30. They look and sound awesome when they are flyiing in formation. Glad I managed to get a glimpse of them before they left.

They fly to the UK for a quick stop off and some fuel , then on to Belgium for an overnight and more fuel , then back home to Katterbach, Germany.

The Chinooks routed to RAF Shawbury (near Shrewsbury) for fuel and then continued on to Lakenheath for a night stop.
They departed from there this morning to cross the Channel on their way back to Germany.
