    I've heard "it's a wild day,cat altogether!"

But never heard "it's a wild day, clean cat altogether!"

Ive heard clean cat loads of times.
Also - 'clean rotten' meaning very dirty or very drunk.

I've heard 'clean rotten' heaps of times, but never. Heard 'clean cat'..

But sure, we'll loose any sleep over it!!

    Another one,
"sure he was only touching the road in spots!!"
(He was going rather fast and came in contact with the tarmac at irregular intervals)

I have always thought it funny when I hear people say 'empy' instead of 'empty'.

  • Registered Users Posts: 143 ✭✭smugchik

    Weird stuff:

    'thamarragh' instead of tomorrow
    'mind' instead of remember
    'foundered' for cold

Good one. I forgot about the weird shade/shed thing.

What about calling the afternoon the evening? Where does that come from? ie Two o'clock in the evening... haha

Never heard anyone say 2 in the evening in my life, duno where your getting that out of but it is common worldwide to use evening after 4pm there is no real official time that the evening starts or finishes though. I wouldn't class that as Donegal slag at all!

Any chance of a translation for the poor oul' blow-in?

"G'wan" instead of please i.e. "g'wan gis a break". I was scolding students for being rude 'til I heard other teachers saying it!

Just asked my husband about this and we both say amn't. I use it while speaking to people and in text messages. I never even thought it was wrong. Oops!

I hear it every week in Letterkenny from colleagues who come from the Killygordon and Ballybofey area. Also from someone from Gweedore.

Not a donegalian myself but been in college up there for the last year. Aye and wile are the best words ever invented imo! :D Actually the donegal accent in general is the best, seriously I could listen to ye talk crap all day! :D
Gotta love donegal slang, although at times I have needed a translator! Hadn't a clue what people were on about talking about wains! :D

I was really shocked as he was quite articulate in other areas.

"amn't" is grammatically correct. It is a common usage in Hiberno English.

I remember years ago having new neighbours from England and how they were confused by another older neighbour when he would tell them that he was "heading up to the firm to check the kettle" :D:D

    Aye
    wild
    Hai
    Lad
    yoke/yock
    Brave
    damn the hait
Cave (pronounced calf) as in "he calfed on his twelfth pint of Guinness"

Also very confusing to people in Dublin in my experience is denoting your shopping as "messages", eg "got a few bags of messages in dunnes earlier". It's like speaking in tongues when ya speak fast on a phone to a local I'm told :pac:

"Land" for "arrive", as in "we landed in Letterkenny at 2 o'clock".

"Dodge" for "walk" as in "I dodged up the road to Mary's house".

"Land" for "arrive", as in "we landed in Letterkenny at 2 o'clock".

We have that down the Wesht too.

After being confused by and takin' a hand out the accent since I moved up, I heard myself shouting "hi sir!" at my 11 month old the other day......

Great thread. All I can hear in my head when reading it all are my dad & relatives (well those relatives obviously from Donegal ... ) speaking :D

  • Registered Users Posts: 46,098 ✭✭✭✭muffler

I recall spending a couple of years in Dublin and the feckers used to laugh at me when I'd say something like "sit you down there" or "go you up the stairs first". They would be in stitches as they would always have "you" at the start of the sentence :(
