    Hi,

About to graduate from B.Sc. Business and Management and I am just wondering if it is possible to change the name of my degree.. Basically I have done few management subjects since 1st and 2nd year, when they were compulsory.. and if I could change my degree name to include an area which I have studied more in depth it would present a more accurate portrayal of my studies at DIT, not to mention the benefit towards my career plans.

e.g. change to B.Sc. Business and Economics..... or B.Sc. Business and Statistics.

I have a feeling this would be easier in more modularised universities.. anyone ever tried this at DIT? Or if I tried it, would I be able to force the issue or would I not stand a chance?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,

Having attended another University as well as DIT, I'm sure you'd have no luck with this. The titles of the degrees are part of the process each program goes through to get recognised by a college.
If you put a different name for your degree on your cv, you'd get caught out when your employer asked for your transcript.
The best approach is to emphasise the areas that you specialised in on your cv. Business and Mgt in DIt has quite a good rep with employers, so why would you throw that advantage away by making up a degree name that no employer has heard of?

While you are at it OP, why don't you ask them to change some modules too?

That degree (which I believe is DT365) is one of the more highly regarded business degrees in Ireland - why change that?

As mentioned, I would simply concentrate on your focus on statistics/economics in your CV. Employers don't judge a degree by the title. You could always get a masters in either of these disciplines if you want to specialize..

And to answer your question, no you can't change the name of it, but sometimes you can switch in the 3rd year depending on your circumstances.

    Hi OP,

Just finished 1st year of DT365. I don't know why you would want to do that. As others have said, it's one of the better undergrad business courses in the country, and employers recognise it as such, changing the title of the degree would be counter productive. You can always say on you're CV what areas you specialised in.

OP - When it comes to the interview, you are going to have to sell yourself, not your degree. Don't forget that.

Thanks all. I'm over in Canada atm, and I was going on the basis that the DT365 rep would be non existent over there, but it is rather done as a Major Minor sort of thing.. So based on the name of my degree, people here assume I have a minor in mgmt, which I don't.. but rather econ/stats.

Either way, thanks for the advice.
