Cellular Network Data iPhone

I have a 1gb allowance each month on my iPhone, but I noticed yesterday that my data had gone from 935mb to 1.5gb in the space of about 30 mins even though I wasn't surfing the net. The same happened 2 weeks ago when the data went from 150mb to 700mb in the space of about an hour. Do I have apps running in the background…

Do I have apps running in the background and if so what are they likely to be?
The only app I used at home yesterday was Sky News watching Obama's arrival, but that was thru the wifi, I definitely turned it off by pushing the home button before leaving the house.
