    A well deserved silver medal today for Ireland’s Jenny Egan from the Salmon Leap club in Leixlip in the Sprint Canoe K1 5km I.C.F World Cup event in Racice in the Czech Republic. A silver medal also went to the Czech Republic’s Anna Adamova.

    Jenny had previously taken silver, at World Cup 2 in Szeged, Hungary – the first medal of any colour by an Irish female sprinter . The DCU sports science athlete has had some very solid results in the run up to this year’s world championships.

    Today, the Gold went to Great Britain’s Lani Belcher,the 21 years old from Brisbane who was released by the Australian team in 2008 when she opted for her parents home nation – GB. Jenny Egan finished just 2.7 seconds behind Lani Belcher today.

    The 5000m event is one of the most popular of all in championships and today was no exception. Quickly a group of 5 girls broke from the field headed by Lani Belcher (GBR), Jenny Egan (IRE) Anna Adamova (CZE) and Kristina Zur (USA). The Austrian, Anna Lehaci, could not keep up with the pace. So it was a four person fight for the medals. However, due to a miscalculation the bell for the final lap was sounded early confusing the athletes leading the race. Eventually all the athletes completed the full distance with Lani Belcher (GBR) sprinting to the Gold medal. Due to the confusion two silver medals were given to Adamova and Egan with Bronze going to Zur.

    Great Britain added two golds, a silver and two bronze medals to their silver and bronze medals from yesterday in Racice. Their total of 6 medals out of 12 Olympic events confirmed GB canoeing status as a serious contender in the sport of Sprint Canoeing in the build up to the London 2012 Olympics.
