Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Test your computer Knowledge

PCiQ is a supposedly serious and high quality test that asks you questions about computers, software and hardware. Then it determines your Iq in terms of Computer knowledge. Its actually the most interesting test I have ever taken and I would suggest that anyone here interested and knowledgable in computers to take it.

There are 3 sets of tests: The mini question one,the standard 25 question one,and the Full 50 question one.

    Some questions are:

    A firewire is A/an:
    What is a search engine?
Versions of Intel's Pentium 4 CPUs can be fitted into all of the following sockets except:
    RAID is a/an:
Which would have the largest file size?

    Test:

    www.pciqtest.com

I took the FULL TEST and got 52% (Some of the stuff i didnt know what it was :D)

    loved this question

In chatrooms and email messages, the symbol :) is used to
    .
    .

What has computer knowledge got to do with IQ?

You might as well ask questions about differentials and alternators (in a car in case you don't recognise the terms) and claim that advanced knowledge of cars is an indicator of a high IQ.

Jeez lighten up fella, the term iq is used loosely to expand to your knowledge of computers not your intelligence... there seems to be someone who gets ratty about everything.

    Same.

Had a question on fines for illegal downloads in the US, was deffo gonna get that one:rolleyes: Yeah, several were too vague.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 835 ✭✭✭the watchman

Is there anyway I can do the test with Firefox,no pics loading at the moment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,998 ✭✭✭✭Cuddlesworth

Some of the questions are way too specific, like "what is the minimum fine for downloading a song in the US". Like I give a ****.

86% on the full test :-)

    92%.

I'm weak when it comes to hardware.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,553 ✭✭✭lmimmfn

I did the quick test and got 2 wrong( 80% ), one of which was along the lines of:
Most email programs puts new email messages in
    1. Draft folder
    2. Sent folder
    3. Inbox
    4. None of the above.

HOWEVER, email messages does not indicate the source, recieved emails obviously go into inbox, saved emails go into drafts etc.

Also "programs puts" is a typo in the quiz :), oh and theres a question on a connector and no connector is shown lol.

Either way, its not great :)

Ignoring idiots who comment "far right" because they don't even know what it means

88% in full test, Im pulling the US questions put me off too card, some vague ones too like a KMV (should have been KVM) switch I put None of the above.

I should be ashamed of myself though I work with computers for the last 10 years.

was bored so I kept at it

    92% in Standard and

    100% in Mini

74, happy enough. Some of the questions seemed a little outdated.

90 % on quick test. Think questions are poorly worded for a quiz. Many of the answer options are ambiguous.

    Fun though. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 489 ✭✭mlumley

I got 58% on the full test

Cant see pictures in neither FF nor Konqueror. Got to about question number 14 when there was a picture question which i couldnt see. :(

Some of the questions were very vague. Like:

    What is FTP used for?
    a. transfer files over the internet
    b. Building websites.

    IMO it should be both.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,803 ✭✭✭✭kippy

    84% on the full test.
Agree, some of the questions are very vague and unclear - reminded me a bit of a microsoft exam.

    No, it shouldn't.

How does FTP Build websites? FTP = File Transfer Protocol and the only relation to websites is as a method of moving the files to the server.

If you dont have ssh access to the server then you ftp up the html documents to the web server. Any website I ever created no FTP, no website.

But it does not build a website it moves the files. Therefore it could not possibly be the answer... nothing vague there. The answer was clearly "transfer files over the internet"

    72% on the standard test
    90% on the full test.

    Hrmmm.

Is that not a bit like saying brick layers dont build houses they just move bricks about?

Will you concede that it is a confusing question?

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 9,689 Mod ✭✭✭✭stevenmu

Not confusing IMO. For e.g. a keyboard is used to enter letters, not to build websites. It's hard to buld a website without a keyboard, but that doesn't mean it's what it's for.

FTP = File Transfer Protocol. It's sole purpose is to transfer files. If you choose to use those files to build a website that's entirely up to you and nothing to do with FTP.
