I'd hardly say he is obsessed with that record. No harm in setting himself targets and that is an obvious one to aim for.

Sorry but I don't see how an English record is something for an Irish player to aim for?

So what record does he set ? Top goal scorer in Ireland & Britain, which leads to rows over British Isles etc.

However if he gets to 53 goals he'd move into world's top 10 of International Goalscorers, now that for me would be something more to aim for.

Fair play to Cox but he scored against a really poor NI side. Maybe needs another look at before he gets thrown straight in to the starting XI in a competitive game

After tonight they can keep their 6 counties too tbh.

Was just wondering why Trap hasn't the guts to let the team play like that in real games. We might have still lost to Russia but I'd say we'd have won the game against Slovakia and all the other ones so far.

Bobby Charlton's record of 49 goals is a well known and longstanding record and it would be a nice landmark for Keane to pass. Once he got the Irish record it was a good target to aim for. When he passes 49 maybe he'll look to passing Batistuta on 56.

    He's played more games though

5 - 0 is tasty enough even against an admitedly shambolic opposistion. Any site to see the goals???

I think Robbies also the only currently playing player there, counting the players above him only.

However, he's gonna get seriously overtaken, looking at the players below him!!

    Whoo! :)

4 more please. Robbie to score a goal and shut you lot up as well.

Hope you put some money on that!

Why? If he surpasses it Bobby Charlton will still be England's top scorer. Robbie is not English or British and the record holds no relevance here (Please don't start the British Isle thing!)

I don't see why he's bothered with it, aiming for World's top 10 I can understand.

Also, it's all a load of balls anyway as it's the games per goal that counts. Both now have 106 caps but difference is that Charlton was a midfielder.

Good to see Ireland scoring 5 goals tonight but that Northern Ireland team was an embarrassment! It'll be a totally different ball game out in Macedonia against higher quality opposition.

Robbie would have been a kid when Lineker came close to matching Charlton's record, so he would be aware of that total. Having obliterated the Irish record Charlton's 49 is a fine personal target to set himself.

    On the game itself:

It was a fine run-out to bring some confidence into the camp. Keane and Given got some much needed game time under their belts which is no harm.

We have some promising youngsters emerging which is great to see and the squad has some good depth. With the likes of Long, Cox, McGeady, McCarthy, Coleman, Clark, Foley in the mix things look reasonably bright for the future. If a Roy Keane type midfield leader emerged then we would have a very bright future.

Stokes pulling out citing that he was tired and McCarthy/Wigan dragging their feet explaining that McCarthy picked up an injury

its the mccarthy issue. we seem to have a few problems with epl clubs and their direct dial phone numbers. oh and we seem to get mixed up or confused when they do call us.

NI C were certainly shambolic tonight against ROI C. 5 nil is some tonking and we very rarely see the like. I was expecting a tight one but it ended up being a rout. How wrong I was.

It's nice every once in a while for the plucky team from up north to be reminded not to get too many lofty ideas into their heads. :p

I think that it'll be good for confidence heading into the Scottish game as well as the all important Macedonia fixture. Don't believe a win has ever been achieved over there in Skopje but hoping that'll change. A win in Yerevan and a win in Skopje could prove absolutely invaluable.

Was listening to Off the Ball earlier & they were talking about it alright , supposedly The FAI were complaining that they havent been contacted by certain individuals. Surely they have to take the initiative on this & be in constant contact with the players , after all im sure its them who organise everything including flights etc no?

It's played at every NI state event and all sports to my knowledge.

    No need for politics really.

Officially it is used as the national anthem for the State of Northern Ireland.
    "God Save the Queen" (alternatively "God Save the King") is an anthem used in a number of Commonwealth realms and British Crown Dependencies. The words of the song, like its title, are adapted to the gender of the current monarch, with "King" replacing "Queen", "he" replacing "she", and so forth, when a king reigns. It is the de facto national anthem of the United Kingdom and some of its territories;

They can come up or change it any time they want, sure you can argue about the politics of it but they arnt using it to wind up Irish fans.

The UK does, GSTQ is the official anthem of the UK, but not of the individual strands which make up the UK.

Is the National Anthem of Scotland GSTQ?
Is the National Anthem of Wales GSTQ?

The answer to both questions in No.

Nor is GSTQ the official anthem of England though is used as such at times.

N.Ireland does not have a national anthem and so use GSTQ for sporting events.

Danny Boy is used for Commonwealth Games and has also been used by other sports stars who dont want to cause offence such as Barry McGuigan

They also use the Union flag as the state flag as it does not have an official flag

But anyways back to the game, it was good to see them play football but the NI team was very inexperienced and I would take nothing from it.

Scotland does not have an official Anthem, default anthem is GSTQ however Scotland have chosen to use Flower of Scotland

Wales have be using Land of Our Fathers since the 19th century but also use GSTQ and England have a number of songs but the main ones being GSTQ and Jerusalem which is sung before the FA Cup Final

So you're agreeing that it's not officially their national anthem then?

You're the one arguing with me for no reason!

Not really "no reason". You brought up this non-topic. I was pointing out the pointlessness of the topic. I don't care what they play or don't play. I don't care if it is or is not their national anthem. This is the soccer forum, lets talk about soccer.
