And Aldi does not give boards discount as far as I know :) Bear in mind though that this model and the Aldi one does not have MHEG 5 so it will not work with RTE's new digital text or future interactive featues.

Tony: How did you find this out? Box has 'Saorview' logo on it, i.e. Saorview certified (if not officially now, presumably by time STB goes on sale - 2nd June) and therefore have MHEG-5. Separate Boards thread on the Aldi 'Saorview' STB here:

No mention of USB on box? Is there one for recording etc?
Digital Satellite TV: Good question. Confusion over answer though. Read dedicated thread on the Aldi 'Saorview' STB here:

Go to Page 5 for discussion on USB feature.

If the Aldi one is truely Saorview certified, then it most definitely will have MHEG5 middleware, as it's part of the spec. required for certification.

eventually found the manual online and it has USB according to it's spec sheet. Does some PVR features but media player is poor, mp3 and jpg only, no video. Suggest apart from being an aldi product (everything in there is cheaper!) that they cut production costs on the box but no having to pay licence fees for some vid codecs? Possibility?

true, no mention of mheg5 in the manual but does say it can do digital teletext so that's a good indication that it has and of course the saorview sticker is a good clue too:-) I doubt very much that they would be advertising this as approved if it wasn't. I'm sure it will appear on the certified list shortly.

Digital Satellite TV: Re above two Aldi 'Saorview' STB comments - Fair, objective appraisal from a competitor (with commendable track record for customer support). Good to see & a credit to Boards. Well done tvtrade.ie.
I have no connection with Aldi or TV Trade (or any other STB retailers).

Akura, manufacturer of the Aldi 'Saorview' STB Model AVT8010, now appears on Saorview Approved Products Listings - just in time for Aldi to sell as planned on 2nd June. Unusually no specific models yet listed on Saorview Akura page. We should expect this omission to be rectified soon by Saorview.

Sorry my thread notification got knocked off for some reason so just seeing this now. My earlier post was wrong this box is Saorview certified and therefore does have MHEG 5 . My apologies
It looks like the best value saorview approved box at the minute

There is something wrong with the page you linked to, the akura link connects to LG products. It is like the Akura logo was just pasted in to make it look like they are certified

Foggy: just checked links - they all work for me! You trying to start a conspiracy theory?
Tony - thanks for clarifying that issue.
An apology? Bah! Disgusting! Cowardly! Beneath the dignity of any gentleman, however wrong he might be.

(Think he might have been joking!)

sorry it is not your link that was wrong but the saorview page showing the manufacturers, you cant click on the LG icon and the Akura icon opens the LG product page and there is no nordmende link to their product page

Understandable confusion. LG logo link (on this saorview.ie page) not presently working but clicking on the 'LG' link on left-hand side column works and brings you to the saorview.ie LG page.
Same issue presently with NordMende logo link.

I've noticed that as well as having a Saorview-approved STB tomorrow, Aldi also have a Free to Air HD satellite kit.
    http://aldi.ie/ie/html/offers/special_buys3_16975.htm

Could this be used to receive Saorview channels? (It's my understanding HD FTA receivers are MHEG-4 and would therefore receive Saorview channels but aren't MHEG-5 so can't receive digital teletext...am open to correction on this). Just want to clarify because current terrestrial reception for BBC/ITV (am in Northeast) isn't great and am hoping one kit could solve both problems. Not having digital teletext isn't a dealbreaker for me.

No thats satellite, saorview is terrestrial. Even as a satellite receiver the dish is smaller than the recommended minimum of 60 cm

If you're thinking of saorsat the answer is still no as saorsat will be on ka-sat and will require different equipment and the dish will be pointed in a different direction so you wont be able to share a dish for hotbird or eurobird.

No, the Aldi Satellite Kit cannot be used to receive Saorview channels.

SAORVIEW is a digital terrestrial television (DTT) service which means the signal is broadcast from transmission masts across the country and is received through a standard TV aerial paired with either a set-top-box or a new integrated digital television (iDTV).

RTÉNL is currently in the process of developing and testing a free-to-air satellite service - Saorsat, which is simply an alternative way to deliver Saorview. It will probably have the exact same content as Saorview.

If you are wondering if the Aldi Satellite Kit you have linked to will be capable of receiving the Saorsat service in the future, the answer is also 'no'. The kit you will require (including different type of LNB) to receive Saorsat when it begins transmitting (via satellite) is discussed here and on this sticky:
