Any chance of an upload of a few seconds of that?

Tipp v Cork in native HD now.

Wow, the difference between RTE2 HD via Saorview & that of an upscaled SD Picture on my HD UPC box is pretty big!

Can you post a pic of the intro animation (full screen one, not the little one), that included "available in HD on Saorview" before the match?

I wish they would have The Walking Dead and Blue Bloods in HD. Any chance that they will?

I have a Samsung 32 inch HD tv. Now I am only running this with an indoor aerial (the rabbit ears one, about 100 years old), but as the TV is Digital ready Im receiving all the channels (3e, rte news now etc.)

So I dont think I need Saorview...but I am getting the true HD on Network 2? (yeah i still call it network!)

The only reason im doubting is I havent heard many people saying they are in the same situation, and everyone is running around getting saorview.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,808 ✭✭✭Apogee

Your Samsung is Saorview compatible (if possibly not certified) so you don't need anything else.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,655 ✭✭✭El Inho

    brilliant...

just watched the hurling in HD....anyone else think the managers got makeup before their post match interview?

The announcer just announced Cool Runnings would be in HD, doesn't look it to me

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,761 ✭✭✭✭Winters

They are getting their money's worth now with Cool Runnings showing in HD!

The DOG tag needs to be done in HD mind you, and a good bit fainter to make it that bit less obvious. I think its just the block of white that the HD is in is too much, if they had the HD on its own a bit like BBC1hd it might not be so obvious.

Its not, probably meant on RTÉ2 HD.

Upscaled SD. No mention of HD in the EPG. DOG is soft looking too unlike the hurling earlier.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,910 ✭✭✭barnicles

That's what I thought, the DOG looks soft as normal, if they announce that it's on RTE Two HD before every programme it sorta defeats the purpose, most people with DTT do know it's on channel 2, considering they're watching it

I made a comparison of the RTE2 HD DOG for upscaled SD vs HD.

Both of these are taken from 1080p images.

http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/55507 (use mouse over to compare)
Two different DOGs I think. I was watching the hurling today and as soon as they switched to the outside broadcast the dog changed to the sharper version as you posted from yesterday's rugby. Id say the Observe (OB company) equipment are originating a genuinely higher resolution graphic overlay than the RTE studio can generate at the moment. The announcer on RTE Two implied just now that a HD version of "Cool Runnings" was available on Saorview, but it's just upscaled - nice , but not HD.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,634 ✭✭✭Mayo Exile

RTE should rethink this to clear up the confusion. If they are going to use DOGs at all, either have no DOG if theres no HD, like Channel 4HD does, or remove the HD section of the DOG as Channel 5 does.

I flicked over to Criminal Minds on RTE2 at around 3.30 this morning and it was definately on in true HD, I always watch it on Sky Living HD but the RTE2 HD picture was a lot better than it this morning, superb quality on a 50" Panasonic screen

Could it have been running at 8 Mbps upscaled? HD DOG?

I've seen a few of the upscaled programmes thats been on already and even though they are decent pictures, they were nowhere near the quality of what was on this morning

that was my take on what they said as well, they made it sound like it was going to be HD. very poor form by them. just because people don't understand what it is doesn't mean you can be ambiguos about it

Someone else posted last night that Desperate Housewives was in HD also but it wasn't, they may have allocated a higher bitrate to the upscaled material, the HD DOG is a good indicator.

Yep, the HD DOG was clearly in HD, pin sharp edges on it just as it was for the rugby yesterday, I noticed that it was'nt so clear on a couple of other programmes.

Testing the playout system maybe for pre-recorded material.

I was thinking the same myself, best to test in the middle of the night on repeat programmes rather than prime viewing times!

Nay unfortunately, but thanks anyway! :) I'll wait for the World Cup warmups for the next HD game.

i'll see if there is a quick way of doing it, , but editing video files normally takes a long time

apologies for the windowed view, alt + print screen while running WMC gives a black screen only. If you have a specific need i can try and get a full screen view

Thanks for that, mossym. We didn't have an animation like that for the match today. Just the smaller one that was posted yesterday by holidaysong (gone now, @holidaysong can you upload the pic again).

The smaller graphic will probably be the standard, this from RTÉ previously
It is planned that the service will carry a new logo/bug ‘RTÉ 2 HD’ and also a short animation will be played, probably a lower third super, on handover to the live event.
    ...
In all cases the transmission schedule/running order will contain specific data to indicate the true HD events.

Watched the first few minutes of munster leinster on rte2 HD at home . Great quality, I then had to watch it on SD from sky at my friends for the remainder of the game, crap quality.

Its hard to go back to SD after HD.

Thats how they will sell saorview, push the Hd sports and sky will lose out unless they start showing it in HD too.

Saorview is not there to compete with Sky. Sky wont lose out on anything.

Law and Order: Criminal Intent, Law and Order and the movie Running with Scissors are in HD tonight, HD Dog.

Definitely testing playout in HD. No indication of HD in the programme information which is disappointing.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,818 ✭✭✭Minstrel27

Running With Scissors is most definately being upscaled atm. I wish RTE would drop the HD part of the DOG when upscaling.

RTE Two HD on screen at all times seems to be confusing many people

The "RTE Two HD" Dog wasn't the upscaled one, it was the sharp HD one we saw during the 2 games.

Similar also posted for the previous 2 nights, probably playing out pre recorded material for testing purposes without announcement.

I watched a bit of Running With Scissors and it wasn't the sharp HD DOG when I saw it.

Is there any info on the next HD stuff to be broadcast?

On Saturday at 7pm, RTE2 is showing Limerick v Kerry (Munster Senior Football Championship semi-final) and on Sunday at 2pm, Meath v Kildare (Leinster Senior Football Championship quarter-final).

Hopefully we'll see one or both of these in HD.

Yes - for true HD and no - most of the content on RTÉ2 HD at the moment is upscaled SD and transmitted in 1080i HD format .

CSI NY looks to me like its in HD, the DOG is very pronounced like the image posted here earlier in the thread, can someone please verify. I could be mistaken though
