    Join Meteor?

Meteor prepay have an international offer where you can call USA for 15c per minute. That's cheaper than calls to Irish mobiles (29c)!

Drop into a Meteor/CPW and get a SIM. Then text "international" to 50104 and you are ready to go :D

Only till 30th of June but it might save you some $$$$ till then :)

Still hard to beat about €5 per month for unlimited US landline calls.

I even use it on my android phone.

Using voip is the best way togo. Many providers offer cheap calls to the states. Anything from 1.6 cents a minute or in a package.

I have looked in the app centre and I can't find the skype app there unfortunately. There are sip voip ones there but that is at a cost to buy it.

UPC has a bundle add on that gives you free calls to the US (Excluding Hawaii and Alaska) and to landlines in most of Europe and Australia. http://service.upc.ie/service/?aid=54

You can get off peak / all-day depending on what bundle you select.

I use Blueface in conjunction with Vodafone Friends for Free.

If you have free calls to a landline / landlines in general e.g. you're on E-Mobile, you can dial into your Blueface account and then call abroad at their VoIP rates. It saves me a fortune.

I just use Dialwise. They charge you the following rates if your calling from a landline to a landline to most civilised countries (US, UK, Oz, NZ etc)

    * Local rate: Sa-Su: 1.26 ct/min
    Mo-Fr 6pm/8am: 1.26 ct/min
    Mo-Fr 8am/6pm: 4.92 ct/min

Easy to use and access codes are on their website.

How crazy is that.. ten times the price of irish mobiles. telephony pricing lives in a paralel universe.

Anyway, I use any of a few of the betamax services.

justvoip/voipbuster/etc. there's a lot of them. you can check all the rates here:
    http://backsla.sh/betamax
choose one with free calls to the landlines you want. it's 10 euros then for 3 months.

They've got a lot of bad press over the years, but it's cheap and it works, most of the time. There's really no technical support and the general advice is not to give them a payment method like a credit card where then can then put you on recurring billing.

The OP didn't specify which country in america nor if they wanted a voip or landline based services, but betamax has free landlines on most of the continent and has a local ireland dialup number for access, once you register your caller ID you can use your landline for access without need for internet.
