Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Might need some aerobars for that.

    From BSNYC today....

    http://cgi.ebay.com/100-MPH-High-speed-bicycle-Patent-sale-licensing-/250820870136?pt=Road_Bikes&hash=item3a6616bff8#ht_1096wt_1024

OMG! This guy's invented a bike that can go over 100 MPH! This could change cycling forever!

Seriously though, haven't read the full patent, but it looks like he's just stuck an extra set of chainwheels between the chainwheel and cassette to give it a massive gear, so you're not going any quicker unless you're a whole lot stronger. Am I missing something, or is this a stupid idea?

It can only go over 100mph in his mind though. Wheeeeeee!!

Here's one that did 166mph (268kph) on the flat:

Of course that ebay ad is a complete scam - wind resistance and power (with one or two other minor factors) determines your speed - getting above a certain gearing is pointless unless you can draft a dragster like Fred Rompelberg in the picture above

EDIT - and here's the bike:

USPTO asleep on the job again. He even disclosed an 1896 invention which is functionally the same.

Filed 8 years ago, granted 5 years ago, still no takers. No wonder he has to stick it on eBay.

Even with aerobars, going down a 10% gradient and with a 30km/h tail wind, bikecalculator.com estimates that 100mph would require a power output of almost 4.9kW! The guy is a clown.

I can't believe you bothered to work that out.

    Wait a second....if one extra chain wheel = 100MPH......then surely......<lightbulb>

I'm off to the patent office.

I didn't! The Bike Calculator did - I just typed in the numbers. I was just curious.

Some how I can't see my 23 Gator Skins lasting long at 100MPH.

Damned right it's a stupid idea. I mean, talk about missing the obvious! By far the easiest way to do 100mph on a bicycle ... no extra chainwheels needed nor nuthin ... is just to pedal 4 or 5 times faster than normal
