Tuning BBC/ITV etc

    Hi,

I'm sure this is the most frequently asked question, but is it possible to tune all the UK channels onto a HD tv/Saorview?

We got a HD tv the weekend and it automatically tuned in all the Irish channels - including RTE News, 3e, RTE1 +1 etc - I assume this is Saorview, so I didn't have to buy anything extra to receive it.

Is it possible to tune in the UK channels onto the tv too or will I need something extra?

    Cheers

    Hi

You're in the satellite forum. So unless you have a free to air satellite receiver then no.

However, If you are in a border area of the country, you may pick up UK freeview signals. But to get a good response, you'll need to ask that question in the Terrestrial forum.

    All the best
    Marc

    Cheers Mark.

Any chance this can be moved over to the Terrestrial forum...?

If you are in Tipp I can't see any way you'll pick up Freeview - Borders counties and people along the East coast are getting overspill from UK, but it doesn't penetrate very far into Ireland.

You'll have to use Freesat - via an external box - unless you happen to have one of the rare beasts that have terrestrial AND satellite receivers built-in to the TV. This works perfectly well and is getting cheaper every day - though you will have to live with to switch back and forth from TV to 'external' (probably HDMI) for the box - much like you might have done in the past from RTE etc on TV tuner and 'The BBCs' on the external (probably SCART) connector.

    Thought so, cheers.

Pain in the hole that, pity you can't add them to the new Saorview style and have them in the listings.

    EDIT:

This site is Saorview approved http://www.freesat.ie/ - is there anything there that I can get which would control both the Saorview services and the extra Freesat channels?

The guys on the terrestrial forum are discussing one box in particular that is available from a boardsie at a good price: (<€100)

this is a combo terrestrial and satellite box. It's not Saorview certified and it may not have the 7 day EPG on Freesat but it seems to be quite a beast.
Makes the DTT tuner bit on your particular TV a bit redundant though it might have some use - such as watching RTE while recording BBC off Freesat?

Eire-Dearg, do you have a Sat dish?

If so, a branded Freesat box will compliment Saorview giving you BBC HD, ITV HD CH 4 HD and all channels found here:

    www.freesat.co.uk

Freesat HD boxes are available on Amazon from £90 upwards.

Yep I have a Sky dish.

Would the Ferguson combo box linked above by dowtchaboy do the same job?

Yes, that'll do Sat & Saorview on the one box.

EPG will only show what's on now/next, no MHEG5 for digital interactive services (though BBC red button streams can be tuned in).

If your TV already does Saorview, I'd personally plump for Freesat but the covenience of a combo box may be attractive to you, decent price too.

If you are based in Tipp then give Map Communications a call and they can set up a freeview set up for you. Good reasonable prices depending what you require
