    Hi all.
I've just adopted a 14 month newfie dog. He's the most amazing, loving lump ever.Thats until someone comes to my garden gate and front door. This evening the neighbours son stopped to chat and Wade was locked inside the garden. The neighbour walked over to say hello to him and he growled and snapped at him.I told him off and he was ok with the chap rubbing him then.He is very protective of my kids and myself.Hes not neutered and wonder if that will help?I only have him 3 weeks and he needs a lot of work but i dont want him biting someone.
I have 2 other dogs and they've never done anything like this.I got themat 4months

Can i ask who and where you got this dog off? Do you know its history and why it was being rehomed?

The couple that bought him are emirgrating next month and he wouldnt cope with the heat in australia. He's well socialised with other dogs and is very friendly to people when hes out on his walks. He doesnt like small dogs though. He was a little spoiled by them too.

Thats what they told you..... Do you know these people well?

Ive heard this story so many times and its usually a lie to offload a problem dog onto someone else because they cant be bothered to put the work in themselves.

I suggest you get a trainer in asap and get working on this dog before it becomes a serious problem. I suggest you get him neutered straight away too.

Dont suppose you found the dog on donedeal by any chance?

I did but i also found my last dog on there. The couple are willing to take him back if i dont want him.I have him booked in for the snip next week.I have no need for a full male running around.I have contacted breeders groups and they have told me that newfies can be over protective. He only does it at the front of the house.I think he's throwing his weight around a bit.I work with him every day and he is getting better.Part of the problem is the last owners garden was full enclosed and he couldnt see out.Mine is enclosed but he can see all round.

Sorry but i wouldnt believe a word of it!!! How can they take him back if they are emigrating??

That site is full of dodgy people and that line of emigrating is a favourite one for people trying to get rid of their dogs they cant be bothered with or are having problems with so i really would tread very carefully here as you dont know what the history of this dog really is.

    I absol despise donedeal:mad:

I agree with you about Donedeal.I do know this couple,Im working with her sister and they really are emigrating.I do think they bought this wonderful animal without doing their homework.I working with my older dogs every day and i will keep working with him. He's still young and i have the time to work on him.Just wondered if anyone else had the same issue with their newfie.I think he tests the water with people to see if he can dominate them.

Ah right ok, fair enough. Maybe hes had little or no training and just doesnt know whats expected of him so hopefully with some training and guidance he will be ok.
    Best of luck with him.

We have a newfie bitch and she is the gentlest dog I've ever seen. She throws her weight around with the other dogs when theres food going but that would be the height of it. Shes probably too lazy to be territorial!

He does need a lot of training. He had no lease training and doesnt obey commands too well.Def think the snip will help.It did with my shepard mixes. Thanks for the advice.Ill keep you posted.

He can be a little pushy with the other dogs but hes been put in his place by them. Its only an issue when someone knocks at the door or tries to open the front gate.He acts like hes going to eat you but a lot of its just show
