There's a lot of talk here and elsewhere about how we need to pay our top players more to tie them down. The reality is with a 36,000 seater stadium we can't compete with the top dozen clubs in Europe on wages. However, they can't have all the players either.
Modric and Bale both signed improved contracts in the past 12 months. The key is having players on long term contracts so they can't walk see Carrick. We have learned that lesson, but look at Arsenal- NAsri has 12 months left, and could do a Flamini if he wanted.
The key is buying only plyers that are better than what we have, to take the next step- challenging for the league. Aim for fourth and fifth is pretty likely. Aim for first, and demand we win those games we dominate, especially at home.
As to the older players who are on long term contracts and will be hard to shift,
remember that Defoe was bought (along with Palacios and Chimbonda) to make sure we stayed up. Keane was bought because Defoe got a long term injury.
It worked, we climbed away. Look at West Ham and see how a club with a bigger fground than us (even if they don't fill it like they used to) didn't pull out of the quicksand. Our general transfer policy is not bad- younger players in droves, and sift through. It has brought in Lennon, Huddlestone, Dawson, just like it brought in Davies and Etherington befoe that, and Rose, Walker and Naughten since. We will make mistakes- Gio and Taarabt may embarrass us in the future, but Man Yoo sold Pique and Rossi, that doesn't look too clever now.
To sum up, we need two-three players- really good ones, and keep all our top players. Liverpool aren't selling, so why should we.

HR has been making noises recently about wages.
He knows we need to pay top dollar if we want top players to come to WHL espesically if we cant offer CL football.

I'm not saying for one minute that we abandon the sound finanical rules we've been operating by under Levy but I think we missed an oppurtunity last summer when we didnt sign some top class players

Is Dempsey not supposed to be on 80/90K.

I wouldn't think them figures are right especially Vertonghen and i would doubt if Walker is on more than the club captain.

Read somewhere the other day that Bale is our highest paid player on £110,00 a week.

Sight of Bentley's wages would probably cause one to inflict copious amounts of pain to oneself. Probably for the best that they aren't on display!

If Billy Gallas is on £60,000 then there is no prizes for guessing which CB will be cut loose at the end of the year.

Did Sandro sign an extension recently ? I'd be doubling his wages if he hasn't.

I'll never believe that, maybe...maaaaaybe that's the max he can earn with bonuses and addons, but 90k flat, no, not something levy would ever sign off on.
