I saw the thread listing the top 5 worst beers and got wondering if everyone is giving out about nearly every beer....what is left that people think is nice?

I'm no beer snob, personally I'll drink pretty much anything (except a couple which were mentioned, dutch, hollandia, sol) but I do have a few that I think are really nice

    Tiger (probably my favourite beer!)
    Singha
    Heineken
    Corona

What else should I be adding to my list??

If you dont mind me asking, how can you like Tiger AND Corona? Tiger is a very tasty beer but Corona is bland generic flavourless gunk.

    My top 5 would be:

    1. Blue Moon
    2. Svyturys Baltas Wheat
    3. Okocim Mocne
    4. Goose Island IPA
    5. Moosehead Lager

Bit of a mixed bag, but these are my current favourites:
    Brewdog Hardcore IPA
    Delerium Tremens
    Speakeasy Prohibition Ale
    Samichlaus
    Anchor Humming Ale

A very tough question. I will cheat.

Not all of these are in order of preference, but some of them are.

    TOP 5 ALES

    1. Metalman Windjammer
    2. Dungarvan Brewing Co. Helvic Gold
    3. Galway Hooker
    4. Trade Winds
    5. Sharps Atlantic IPA

    TOP 5 STOUTS

    1. O'Hara's Leann Folainn
    2. Dark Arts Trouble Brewing
    3. Portherhouse Wrasslers
    4. Dungarvan Brewing Co. Black Rock
    5. Porterhouse Plain

    TOP 5 LAGERS

    1. Harviestoun Schiehallion
    2. Porterhouse Vienna Dark Lager
    3. Brooklyn Lager
    4. Porterhouse Hersbrucker Pilsner
    5. Sam Smith pure brewed lager

As people have already pointed out, this is a very difficult question to answer definitively. As a result, I'm going to limit my response to the beers I've enjoyed most over the last month or so.

    In no particular order:

Trouble Brewing Dark Arts (on cask)
    Galway Hooker
    Metalman Windjammer
    La Trappe Quadrupel
    Speakeasy Big Daddy IPA

    Löwenbräu
    erdinger weissbier
    heineken
    tsingtao
    becks

That's like picking your favourite child! :D

Hard choice and it changes constantly, but so far it'd look a little something this....

    1. Sierra Nevada Pale Ale (My 'go to' beer)
    2. Absolutely love the beers from Odell Brewing Co. Their Cut Throat Porter, Red Ale & St. Lupulin would be my favourites from their range
    3. Dungarvan Helvick Gold (the nicest out of their 3)
    4. Porterhouse Red on draught
    5. Goose Island IPA

Special mentions go to Harviestoun's Bitter & Twisted, Brooklyn Lager and of course, one of my all time favourite bottled beers which is sadly no longer available, Aldi's Traditional Ale.

Tough question. As of now, let's say...

    - Tripel Karmeliet. For me, it's simple the best blond beer. The 3 grains give it a unique flavour that I can't resist.
    - Kaastel Bruin. So dark it has an almost sweet, chocolaty taste, but still has a strong body.
    - Porterhouse HopHead on tap. Perhaps it's because I don't know many Irish beers, but I think they have a lot of excellent stuff. The fruity bitterness of HopHead is really nice.
    - Chimay. Red over Blue, most of the time.
    - Westmalle Tripel. Second best blond beer. Amazing grain flavour.

I would name each of the 7 trappist beers and a few others, but these are probably among my all-time favorite !

    Corona

    1. Guinness
    2. O'Haras IPA
    3. Anchor Steam(all varieties)
    4. Innis & Gunn
    5. Fruh

Guinness and O'haras are solid.. The rest are open to change.. just current favourites!

It's getting hard to tell the best beer thread from the worst beer thread.

    Budweiser
    Heineken
    Guinness

    Anything else is ****e!

You have, of course, tasted the hundreds of beers beers mentioned in this thread to know that they're all ****e?

Or do you just 'know' this from your huge life experience?

What about fantastic chippers, waffles, amazing chocolate, great bread, moulle frites and generally really good supermarkets and restaurants?
Safe, clean streets? Good public transport? Ladies in windows? It's all good.

At least that was my experience in Antwerp.

    3. Brooklyn Local 1

My five favourite beers would be:

    Becks
    Erdinger
    Stella Artois
    Grolsch
    Tyskie

Its a pity they dont have some of these on tap in most pubs, end up having to drink a bland lager like Carlsberg/Budweiser etc Find the German beers dont cause a bad hangover the morning after either..

Can I ask what did you think of Brooklyn Local ?

Really fruity, and strong on the nose. Probably the best Brooklyn brew I've ever tried. I wouldn't normally be a fan of this brewery - especially from tasting some of their other brews. I bought a bottle of summer ale recently which was awful.

It depends on how interested in beer you are I suppose, I've no interest in cars for instance so couldn't tell you anything about them but I love beer so am open to new ones all the time, I would recommend this excellent book to start you on your journey it lists around 1700 beers and is great value for money:

Its almost like picking a favourite child ! (Its you junior ciaran76 if you are reading this) :p

Anyone tried Pliny the Younger (Russian River brewing company)?

Comes out top of the beeradvocate list anyway. http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/863/21690

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 11,941 Mod ✭✭✭✭BeerNut

I think the fact that it's exceedingly rare has something to do with its exceptional rating.

Pliny the Elder is lovely, but again I dunno about the best-in-class category.

    In no particular order:
    Duvel
    Heineken
    Miller
    Hoegaarden
    Stella Artois

If I could pick a sixth it would be Orval.

Orval was the last one that came to mind so I just put it at the bottom. If it was a which tastes nicest it would be fighting for 1st place with Duvel :)

Only Stella Artois and Leffe are made in the brewery I work in

Lidl's Grafenwelder Weissbeir tastes almost the same and is cheaper.
